I had good laugh when I first saw him in Lillies in the Field, and my little sis couldn't get enough of him in To Sir with Love. My favorite movie with him is In the Heat of the Night along with Rod Steiger.

An amazing actor in his day who took on roles that meant something.
But also another recent one (like Joan Didion and Bob Dole) that made me think - he was still alive? When Didion passed away the NYTimes obit on file was so old that people who'd been interviewed for it were dead

I was 8 when In the Heat of the Night came out. I didn't see the movie then, but the "They call me Mr. Tibbs!" trailer was all over the TV, and it became embedded in my mind. When someone asked my name I'd answer "They call me Mr. Tibbs!"
I saw the movie decades later and it's one of my top 10 movies.
