1950 Black Phantom

I have a 1950, all original Schwinn Black Phantom. It is in very nice condition other than light surface rust on the chrome. After being stored for the last 70ish years in an attic the original US ROYAL MASTER tires have disintegrated. Does changing the tires affect the future value of the bike?

You could put new tires on it and keep the old ones if you plan on selling it. I have a similar situation and that’s what I plan to do.

If you don’t plan on riding it , I think it is acceptable to display with original tires even if they are “aged”. I have seen plenty that are displayed with original non functional tires. I don’t think you would be ruining the value by changing, provided you keep the originals as was stated. Either way, it’s your bike!

That bike would definitely fall into a collectable bicycle. Were I the one buying it, I would want it to be as original as possible, meaning sell it exactly as it is right now. Don't clean it and don't bother attempting to replace anything. The serious collector who buys it will want it to come to him that way. On the other hand...

If you do clean it up and spend some money on items that need replacing (such as tires if you can get them) the value might not diminish all that much. Sold as a road worthy and safe to ride vintage bicycle might attract a larger market and fetch the same kind of money that a savvy collector would offer - kind of a darned if you do and darned if you don't situation.

I would like, very much, to see a few pictures of the bike as it sits now.

The only reason to change the tires is if you plan to RIDE the bike. Old, disintegrated tires are not safe. As a display piece, it will be worth MORE with the old disintegrated tires. So its really all about do you plan to ride this bike?

Please don't confuse ebay "asking" prices with "selling" prices. Many sellers never get their ask price. some are far from it. Value is determined once an item actually SELLS. Its easy enough to check SOLD prices.

I am not displaying this bike, but I am storing it. Is there any reason that I can't hang it from its front wheel with the rest of my (daily driver) bikes?

Is there anyone on this forum that remembers the "Schwinn Shop"? Mine was on Taylor Rd. in Cleveland heights, Ohio. It was a regular stop on my way from school in the late 60's/early 70's.

Yup, Rancho Park Cycles, west Los Angeles. I bought my Nishiki Competition there in 1971 and various parts before and after. They also straightened the frame of my first Capo after it got bent back in a left hook collision. Russ Hughes, the owner, was a great guy.
