I have a 2018 rim brake Cannondale quick that I just love. It’s become my “do it all” bike. Recently fitted it with 38c gravel tires to try my hand at trails. But here is my question:

Have any of you ever fitted your hybrid with aerobars for longer road rides? I’m going on vacation later this year and only want to haul one bike. Need it to take me to the beach, ride gravel trails at local parks, but also join a buddy for a few road rides. The gearing on it is decent (I hold 18mph on the flats for an hour or so with 30c tires, just averaged 17+ with the fat tires). I have shorty bars sitting about from my time as a triathlete, so no cost to this idea. Just wondering if there would be handling issues with such wide bars? Any input (ridicule, criticism) is welcome!

Sorry, but no criticism here. I don't know of any downside. I like having aero bars on my bikes. Sometimes I am shocked to see how much faster I go when I use them.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m very used to them from riding tri bikes, I kept a pair on my drop bar road bike, but until now it has never occurred to me to put them on a flat bar bike with trigger shifters.

Do it! Had straight bar Cdale back when I got back into riding heavily again. Put clip on tri bars. Was great to have another riding position and picked up about 2 mph when "down and dirty".

I had DIY aerobars on my hybrids for a while, liked them a lot. Didn't have any handeling issues. Just because we are on hybrids doesn't mean we can't get aero. https://imgur.com/gallery/KvS2FjH

Been using them for years on what may be one of the original hybrid bikes, my GT Arette, they work great for me.

Just because you're on a hybrid, doesn't mean you don't go fast. I chased a guy on a local path along the beach yesterday, for 8 miles. When I finally caught him I see he's on a hybrid with a rear rack and trunk bag, flat bars, flat pedals and sneaker, averaging 17mph. Had he been using an aero bar I never would have caught him.

thank you. I really like the look of them especially with the aero bars and bar ends. It looks like you have lots of different hand positions to choose from.

Dude, I’ve never seen anybody so seamlessly integrate refrigerator ice maker copper tubing and zip ties into an aero set up like that. Have you submitted those pictures to GCN?

I had some on my hybrid back in the day(10+ yrs ago). I really liked them for the weekend rides... i thought they were comfy and it was a nice change from just the grips or bar ends. I have thought about putting some back on now that I am getting back into riding... not sure if my lower back can handle the position though.

Riding with aero bars stretches your lower back, reducing pressure on the discs in your spine.
