I wonder if standing while cycling can be considered a weight bearing exercise, which is proven to be beneficial? If so, it might be enough reason to incrementally increase out of the saddle time.

It’s weight bearing but essentially no impact, which is a good combination. It’s also fun!

I walk the dog 2.5 to 3 miles a day so not much impact but its good for both of us.

Went out yesterday into a 12/15mph wind out of NE to E and decided it was time to do some standup pedaling i.e. - SW FL Hill Climbing. Got the old legs slightly warm and hit the 50/11 combo for roads that were up to 2.75 miles in length and due East. Total ride of 44.44 miles with 20+ miles of standing.

Many rides go out of town over a 450' hill. I sometimes do the the main chunk of it- 300'+ standing. It's almost a mile.

One more less thing to worry about on a bent bike or trike. Just gear down and spin in comfort.

A bit unrelated to the topic but it was the first thing I thought of when I saw this post. Last year I was riding a vintage Peugeot when I decided to stand on the pedals to climb a very short hill that was just a bit too much to climb seated.
I was only going about 3mph when suddenly something gave out in the drivetrain instantly throwing me into (and over) the handlebars. I caught the stem in the ribs breaking several and injuring one elbow badly.
Sorry to get off topic but I was having flashbacks when I read the post title 🤣🤣

That happened to me too - on a P-8 with a swaged crank - the crank just twisted out of the spider as I accelerated from a red light on a left turn - didn't crash but it left me stranded in the intersection with cars laughing at me.

I had pedals snap off and put me on the ground twice. Third time I felt it break but it didn't come apart. I stopped using that brand.

I was climbing a steep street, maybe 18%, and the freehub body broke in half. I thought the chain broke and somehow I was able to get unclipped and didn't fall. Once off the bike I couldn't walk up the hill because it was so steep my Delta cleats were slipping. I went into the dirt along the road and was able to climb the last bit of the hill and coast down the other side to home.

Yesterday's ride (https://www.strava.com/activities/6552560792) had a 2.75 mile long hard pack section through a State Forest Area that required 2 handlebar lights and my helmet light to be on for safety's sake riding it at 3:45AM. Following that section I began a 3 mile long 50/11 standing stint lumbering along at 11/12mph. It's a bit after 1AM now with the moon beckoning me at 89% of Full Illumination so I'm thinking that it's time to *kit up* and head out but only on paved tonight.

I don't stand much and I'm always a little nervous making the transition. I should practice more.

Hurts my right knee when I stand to pedal. So I don't do it...very often.

I stand to sprint all the time. Faster = funner. Sometimes I stand because the climb is steep and I can put out more power to keep the cadence/gear ratio I want going. Sometimes I stand just to stretch. Sometimes I eat ice cream with a spoon; sometimes it’s just licked off a cone; still others it’s a straw while floating in root beer. Different moments in life require different responses. Life’s too short to take it sitting down. And it’s far too short to drink bad beer.

I ride a BMX with 22” wheels. No sitting ever. 60 years old - a half-hour ride around the neighborhood get the blood flowing into all the nooks and crannies. People look at me funny but they hold their tongue.

I worked with a guy who raced BMX @ 45 years old. He would go to the races with his kid and they had adult races, too, so he started doing it.

I was preparing for a trip to the Eastern Sierra mountains and wanted the lowest gear I had. I had a triple on one bike but only a 25 cog in back so I took the wheel off the other bike (double crank) because it had a 29 cog. I was turning the 30x29 when the freehub body broke. It's a Cole wheel and I can't find a replacement part for it. For the trip I scored a slightly used Ultegra cassette with a 28 and it was fine.
