I use RidewithGPS. If there are multiple rides or routes in the same area, then I am fairly confident that it is ok. Also look for routes from previous years events. I did that last year in Raleigh, NC and found that I could join a route somewhere in the middle. I also found quite a few routes going up the local KOM hill. Not really; that big, but I see that it is a popular route.

Find a local club online. You might not be able to join them for their ride, but use their routes. I did that in Raleigh too.

Lastly, sometimes local clubs will have a library of routes on rwgps. Do one of those.
