That bronze green is notoriously difficult to reproduce. Add in 45+ years of oxidation and the cumulative hours of UV exposure, and your matched paint, if accomplished, might not match everywhere. I opted to polish and stabilize what mine had. A phosphatizing treatment for the bare steel will provide a strong curb to rust formation on the exposed steel.

This was the two for $50 deal and the final result. Most of the original parts went on the red and white one since it was in the best shape. The stems on both were totally frozen. Other than that it was fun putting these back together. I wish they were my size.

Good Frame For Fixed Gear?
I'm looking at a 1971 Super Course basic frame in green, 58.5 cm. Not knowing the geometry, I'm wondering if this would make a suitably sporty fixed gear, or whether it would be too slack. Does anyone have any comments on the wheelbase, head tube angle, and trail?

IMHO, the Super Course designs pre-1974 were middle of the road, sports touring designs. I estimated my 1973 in the 20 ½" size has a 73° HTA, and a 74.5° STA using a angle computing app. The chainstays are long enough to give around 3" of separation from the tire tread (27 x 1¼ tires) to the seat tube. My experience with geometry tables indicates that geometry will change as the frame gets bigger.

I don't know if this helps but my two 23.5-in Raleighs (a '73 Gran Sport and a '73Competition Mk. II) both have 73x73 angles, 57 cm top tubes, 41.5-in/105 cm wheelbase with 44 cm-ish chain stays and 2.5-in of fork rake, yielding around 40 mm of trail, depending on the tire selection. Good rando geometry, anyway!

^ perfect. Thank you both. So, I'm thinking that it's tending toward the slack side of things. It'll be rideable and stable for road use. But it may lack a bit in sportiness or agility (however one describes it, you know what I mean). Hmmm.

I'm certain that the SC is wrong for a fixed gear build. Thanks, all. I will go for a dedicated track frame instead.

Fwiw, I've done single-speed builds on probably a half dozen Super Course framesets, and some were more suited than others. I didn't document frame angles and fork rake, unfortunately, but some wanted more weight up front, some less, some very neutral. Classic Raleigh consistency!

Recently rebuilt the rear wheel and the drive train a little bit. I'm so happy to ditch the freewheel and switch to 7 speed freehub. I was able to respace to 124.5mm OLD (fits just right into original 122mm). And replaced the old Suntour Vx to a modern but still looking ok Shimano Ultegra. Later on I plan to get the Velo Orange 175mm their version of Pro-5-Vis. I have 170mm Suntour Superbe at the moment, I find them way too short for me.

Here is the 1971 I recently finished. Put a Sakae crankset in, Road Champion bar, Shimano Deer Head RD, 14/30 suntour FW and Shimano FD.

Brought home the SC MK II that WGB posted last week in the "Are you looking..." thread. Looks to be all original except for the front rim and seatpost binder bolt.
I like the forged dropouts with hanger, Stronglight crankset and the 25.5" size. Unfortunately the front Jubilee derailleur has a cracked clamp. Might have to put something Italian on there instead.

One of the rare Super Course Mk II, in that paint scheme, that had forged drop outs! When I bought mine in the Seventies, only the 25” frame sizes had forged drop outs. consider yourself lucky!

@Schreck83 you got really lucky with the dropouts, rear derailleur, crankset and hubs! Much of the bike was "upgraded" at the factory. They must have had low stock on the intended components that day.

No longer a Klunker
I assembled the Supercourse I have into rideable condition for the COVID klunker challenge, but I had the parts for this intended build. I made time to complete it, and I'm close to a comfortable fit.
Better light, but seat tilt is off.
Sugino Maxy Crankset with 144 BCD. Modern TA chainring. Miche fixed cog and hub.
Mach 1 omega rim built onto a novatech hub.
Miche Primato pista/strada hub.
Polished 'GB' stem
No tape and mismatched tires at the moment.
The interesting part about this frame is that it's a 52cm seat tube with a 55cm top tube. So as long as i have enough stem extension and seatpost... it fits?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a SuperCourse with that much fork rake or that slack of a front end?
