The rare IM mixte I posted once on April 1st has a nice color. Very close to the color on this other machine I spotted in the wild. The blue/white on the Vette would be a sharp combo.

Posting for Google-ability. My 1985 Centurion IronMan rear dropout positioning screws are threaded M3-0.5. M3-0.5 x 20mm seems to be a fine length. Less robust than a proper hardware but works in a pinch for pennies.




Ironically, I thought I needed them but with the 11-28 freewheel I swapped in, the axel needs to be virtually slammed back else the chain can get caught. Shifts fine in that position and Sheldon suggests “don’t use the dang things.” Glad I didn’t drop $25 on a proper set from eBay.

looks more like the 11 end that’s giving it a problem. I had a 14-28 7s before that didn’t do this. The 6s 600s were certainly a bit skinnier and a min 12t. I think this 11-28 is going to be nice though.

I have decided that I have too many bikes and the racier ones give me less enjoyment at my age and physical condition, so I may be selling this one. I will put the stock parts back on it that I have. I snapped a poor pic yesterday after a 20 mile ride. It was at that time that I kinda figured I am more suited to sporty bikes, not racy bikes. After I clean and polish, I will post in the valuation sub forum to get a price for a kind forum member here who I promised first dibs to.




Sorry for the poor pic, but better ones in a few weeks. I have the low mileage stock chain, freewheel and inner front chainring to put back on. Bike is actually all stock I think except for the stem and levers. This is the 58cm one.

First time out of the neighborhood. I am honestly impressed at the ride quality. Not even kind of twitchy with my stubby stem. Enjoying the 1x7 setup so far 42/11-28. I think the DRIFT MANIAC freewheels on Amazon are worth a look if you want more range. 28t was necessary climbing out of the valley and 11t was necessary blazing on down but happy with the range. This lowland East coaster native will continue to dodge front derailleur changes for now even now in the rolling hills of bourbon country. Ride er till she bucks ya I suppose.

Agreed.
Those '85s are really smooth riders and the forks are the best looking of all the Ironman.
Also the '85s aren't easy to come by. When you find one in your size, seize it.

Exactly. Just recently saw a wanted add for a 600 group here, and a kind member offered for the cost of shipping an early 105 group. Kind folks here. Sent pm to fellow here interested and haven’t heard back yet. Out of town perhaps. I’m not in a hurry. I might even put the stock bits back on it, and I do have some 600 levers and various stems. Sounds more like a winter project though. I’m also tearing down a too small for me Columbus tubed Ross Signature Triad that I will need to pass on eventually.

With a few exceptions, Bike Forumers want to buy at swap meet prices, then sell at 1985 retail.
Who doesn't ? It's human nature.

I’ve been looking at that Turbo for a while. What do you think the top tube measures CTC? Same seller has/had a SemiPro too—also tall.
BTW, I put some 28mm GP4000s on my 85 for commuting duty and they make the broken cement sections a non issue. I fantasize about robbing my son’s 89 Expert of his 6500 dual pivots and breaking out my NOS non aero SLR levers to have the very finest friction shifting 6 speed long distance road bike ever.

What size do you ride ? fleslider site Vintage Centurion , there is a 58cm Turbo listed that has a 57cm top tube , so my guess would be the blue turbo in question would have a 62cm TT , but then on the other hand Centurion did not make odd ST frames . Yes duel pivots are awesome . Your son's bike is cool just the way it is , Tektro's get the job done and don't and cost much .

I have 6500 dual pivots…..
For long times in the saddle, I endorse TRP/Tektro/Soma aero levers. Wide thick hoods.
I may have a set of those, too.

The Iris one is close to stock except for the gearing and the fork. The black one has new Dia Compe dual pivots and Microshift brifters. Both have plenty of stopping power. Don't really use the pinkies since I have short fingers. I mostly brake from the hoods on the black one. 2-3 fingers on the top of the lever is plenty.
