Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No, not at all. Remember, half my family is Italian, with most of their family still over there. I’ve witnessed similar situations, when I was in Naples.

When I went to Naples for a month, I had literally just started dating my wife. It had only been about 5 months. I’ve never been the jealous type, maybe I just never really been in a situation to make me jealous. That was kind of the revolving theme while I was there. Her cousins and sister would take hours to get her ready every time we would go out, and they always wanted to see my reaction.

It is a weird situation when men come to speak to your woman and you can’t understand anything they are saying. Also weird, when you find out your wife’s ex boy friend was in the Mafia.

So daughter #2 had a health issue in November that required her to get an ambulance ride from one ER to another healthcare facility. I just got a note that our health insurance will NOT cover this and the charge is about $1700 for a trip that was only a few miles for a patient who was medically stable.

Obviously I am going to try to negotiate a more reasonable fee. Anyone have experience with this?

He took a hard hit but it really didn't look bad. He jumped right up, then fell. Hoping for good news today.

That blows. I don't understand how medical professionals can deem it necessary to transport a patient to another facility, in the larger scope of treatment, and insurance can break it up a la carte and say, "yeah - nah."

Our healthcare "system" is quite dysfunctional. I am sure you are well aware.

That really sucks. Who called the bus and why did they feel it was necessary? You might try to get them on record.

We narrowly dodged one of those many years ago when my daughter's daycare called an ambulance because she was shivering with a high fever and they had once seen a kid have a febrile seizure. I met the ambulance at the door of the ER and, mainly because it was a military hospital, I think, the crew tore the trip sheet up.

I tuned in late and didn't see the hit. They never replayed it again while I was watching, and I stayed tuned for over an hour until the league finally postponed the game and the fans filed out. It was such an eerie scene to tune in, see the stands totally filled with fans, but there's no cheering going on and the field is totally empty.

The low gear on my MTB is a 32x52, which is pretty darn low. I think I was in the 2nd-lowest gear for the steeper parts of that ride. The gearing is such that 15%+ isn't really a test of brute strength to muscle a big gear, but more a matter of how long you can tolerate going that damn slowly.

It's a windy mid-winter day in quasi-Siberia.

Ever do the (road) ride to Mount Baldy ski lift? First, you climb 5000 feet in 25+ miles to the village, depending on which way you go up. Then, when you just want to have a snack and turn back, the next 4 miles to the top gains 2000 feet. Lots of 15% in that section and I usually have to stop but I have made it to the top without stopping on 34x29.

What's amazing is watching the pros race up that thing after flogging themselves all over those mountains. Too bad there's no more ATOC.
