Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am stunned by the number of them in Austin. Bought new, in Austin. For the winters, I guess?

Edit: Another (bought new in Boulder) was a lemon that they replaced with a used one, because mom's friend wasn't strong enough to push for a new car that didn't randomly short and drain the battery. I'd never buy one either.

This means traffic creeps, often not ever actually stopping, but often dropping below the speed you can go even in 1st. Back when every car had a manual, I imagine traffic moved in increments. What was killing me was traffic up a steep pitch on the way home, with a 4-way stop at the top. SO, Mrs. GJ told me if I bought a manual she'd kill me, because she was tired of hearing me ***** about it.

But I do sometimes miss it, especially because the shifting when you flick the shifter is anything but instantaneous.
Our current car is the first automatic either of us has owned. Here, manual is much more common due in part to the extreme age of many cars still on the road. We opted for auto because of the thousands of topes everywhere. We could have bought a standard transmission Fit if we'd wanted one.
On the way home this afternoon, on the bus, we passed a pickup on the side of the road that said Datsun on its tailgate

Just a garbage vehicle. I don’t know why they are so popular. Knock for leaking oil, interior felt cheap and I had the top of the line. Gas mileage was terrible. Everyone assumed I was a hippie.

And no they, are not better in the snow.

Ronsonol? We watch hobbyists use that (Naphtha) for quick cleaning of watch parts at the bench.

The wife had a 84 Subaru hatchback when I met her. It was a very useful car. Hill holder clutch. She used to carry her goats to the vet, with the back seat folded down. That car did have fuel filter problems, and she once broke down with a goat in the back seat. She always carried an extra filter with her. External, it was a very easy replacement. Different times. We've decidedly gone soft.
