Another free, large vintage steel frame.
This frame and fork was left by a dumpster, with some other odds and ends, how could I NOT rescue it? All of my research indicates this is a Raleigh Super Course Mark II, 25.5" (just my size). WL4 serial number (W for Carlton Worksop), which puts it Summer 1974, in the Emerald Green/White color scheme. Someone did a terrible spray paint job on it. Probably going to go the powdercoat route, and make it single speed townie.

I would have expected Nervex headtube lugs on a ‘74 SuperCourse. I wonder if that’s a different model. Gran Sport?

I used the spec sheet as the reference point, considering the sizes offered for the specific models, and color schemes offered, and landed on this one. The spec sheet says the lugs are Prugnat 62A. It also says Gran Sport sizes topped out at 24.5", this is larger, and wasn't offered in green.

The 14/II lugs are kind of oddballs that turned up on a bunch of different bikes at different price points - the afore-mentioned Super Courses, some Peugeot PA-10 entry/club-racers, and oddly enough, pretty much ALL Swiss Allegros built with 531 tubing between 1961 or so and 1974. Allegro switched to those from Nervex Professionals, and went to basic Bocama Professional lugs c.1975, for instance. I think I've also seen them on some Jeunet 630s.

I think those are Bocama Model 14 Type II lugs on this bike. It past threads there have been other 25.5-in Super Courses with the same lugs - but ONLY 25.5-in Super Courses, not the smaller sizes. Another Raleigh oddity.

Great Score for you! I have found that when you drill the rivets out of the head-badge, you can use small screws designed for gun restoration to reattach it after the PC. I get them for about 25 cents at my hardware store and I bought a tap to make the screws fit correctly. It is a bit easier than searching for the tiny rivets and a way to attach them. Smiles, MH

Lugs - that bike was built at the middle of the bike boom. If the spec'd lugs weren't on the shelf, well the bike had to get built ...
I'm guessing Super Courses were a little less random than the odder by spec Competitions but still - when researching my Competition to establish the year mine was I saw that my bike had nearly as many half-sisters as sisters.

Pure speculation here - maybe those lugs chanced to be made to the angles of the larger frame so less filing and fitting.

Jokes aside, congrats to the OP. Any plans? Looks as if the spraybomb repaint might have provided some level of protection to the frame. Single-color PC or going for the original look?

Headbadge removal
Came out very easy, 3/32" drill bit was just large enough to shift the rivet, but not too large to damage the badge or frame.
