Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't pay much attention to such things either. But, I was at the store with my wife a couple of weeks ago getting some stuff for a barbeque dinner I was preparing, and as we walked by the eggs she commented on the pricing and the articles she read about prices being high.

I didn't buy eggs on that trip. I bought ribs and fixins.

that’s just me and the wife- the girls eat cereal

I have 3 eggs on chicken bread (ground chicken, egg, baking powder and soda baked in a bread pan) with a slice of Muenster cheese and hot sauce every day.

She has 2-3 every day of just plain over easy eggs

I rarely eat breakfast during the week, and weekends are usually something simple and not too heavy pre-ride. The last time I used any eggs was to make spaghetti carbonara a couple of weeks ago.

Most days I eat something around 9:30 but I’ve usually been up 5 hours at that point and either ridden, ran, or lifted.

When the girls are here, I try to be done riding by 6:30.

I didn't know but with all the hoopla on the news I looked while we were shopping. Mrs J buys them. I don't remember the last time I ate eggs. Maybe some months ago on a ride. Oh, and I think she gave me a hard boiled egg last year.

I'm pretty sure it was 2021 when I was on a ride where they had deviled eggs at a sag stop.

I don’t suppose anyone here who uses a PMC is old and decrepit enough to consider mucking around with the ATL time constant…

Rode with the coach today. I’ve been asking for sprint advice for a while and can never ride when they ride.

Met at his house, I brought The Lance and the emonda. I really wanted to ride The Lance since it finally had good tires on it, wanted to see how it handled. Also, if I like it, then I might just race that, if it crashes no harm no foul.

Anyways, I should preface this story with what happened last night. After I put the tires on it, I did a quick check of everything and noticed the headset had a little play. I took it apart put it back together and it still had play after the the preload. I added a spacer under the cap and that fixed the problem. It was late and I was tired so I told myself I would torque the stem tomorrow (which is now today).

Now back at my coaches house. I get The Lance out of the car, he’s not impressed. We set off at nice leisurely pace of 19 mph. He is leading out. I am really liking the way The Lance is feeling. Little effort to keep up with him and very compliant. The reach is pretty far but I get used to it relatively quickly. One thing I notice pretty early on, my stem appears to be slightly crooked. I can’t stand that, once I notice it it’s all I can think about.

He takes me to roads I am familiar with, and shows me a loop we are going to do. It’s 5 miles long, and has 4 sprint sections. We will take turns into leading to each sprint, and go at it. Point of this excerice is peak power, learning which gears to use, finding out what your body can do, how long you can hold and so forth. I have not had any real practice at this. I’m excited.

The first loop is just zone 2. He wants to show me the route and the sim points and he is giving me advice the whole way. Around this time I start to think my bars look more crooked, but that’s impossible.

We finished the first loop and are ready to go “live” as he calls it. He does the first lead in and I am just staying on his wheel and watching. He goes for the jump and I go to follow, I am in the middle of the sprint but something feels wrong. I finish the sprint and take the lead but now my bars are completly sideways. It’s the one time I don’t bring my tools with me.

I won’t bore you with the rest of the details. I did 3 loops 6 sprints, I would stop every so often to straighten the bars but it got progressively worse, to the point I couldn’t complete the exercise. That was very disappointing, but I did hit a Peak 906 watts in one of my side way bar sprints!

As it turns out I never torqued the stem.

If they didn't have health compromises I'd possibly eat eggs every day. Now days I only have them on the weekend, a Saturday morning bacon, egg and cheese sammich is to die for.

I noticed this today, while pulling it out of the car. Pretty sure it’s not new. With a crack in that location, would you still ride the bike?

I think I am actually more concerned with, will the bike assplode? Should I just monitor the crack to make sure it doesn’t get worse? Just put this bike on the trainer and forget about racing it? Look for a new frame? Only use it for leisure?

Glad to hear you weren't hurt. That's the kind of thing that can put you on the ground in a hurry, especially when you are focused on something like max power.

That sounds like good work that you're doing, and will be helpful for learning what your body can do. Something to keep in mind, raw peak power is only part of the game. One of the biggest challenges for newer racers is the surge before the sprint even starts, and being able to get to - and maintain - a good spot on the pack. Very commonly, people burn all their matches in the surge, and are empty when it comes time to actually sprint.

I can't tell if it's paint crack or carbon crack, so in your place I'd take it to a bike shop you trust and ask them. They'll probably be conservative - "You told me it was okay and it asploded and I'm all in bits! I'll sue your asses off!"

Hmmm...Hard to tell from a pic. Could even be an imperfection from where 2 halves of the mold came together that wasn't sanded out completely in finishing.

Well let’s say it is a crack, Ride it and monitor it? Hang it on the wall? I’m going to die a terrible death with pieces of carbon sticking out of my body? I’m leaning towards number one. But I don’t know if when carbon fails how catastrophic it is and or if there is warning?

We were working on that too. He was getting on me because the times I was leading out I was slowly speeding up before the jump. Burning matches, before the sprint even happened. He wants it to be a snap like reflex. It’s going to take some practice for sure. He knows from experience he is good for 250 meters. That’s his limit and when he goes to races he put a mark 250 meters from the finish.

I plan on doing the work out again on Thursday. It was fun and not to hard. He wants me to do it 1-2 times a week. Intervals 30x30 and maybe 30x20 will start in a couple weeks.

Stop moaning about the price of eggs. At least you can get them. Here the government changed teh animal welfare rules for chickens a couple of years ago (to come into effect this year); and the egg farmers spent lots of money upgrading their systems. Then they said they were going to change them again, still with the same effective date. This would have removed one of the options allowed. And then the supermarkets, who are a pair of 800 pound gorillas, said we are only going accept eggs grown under the new proposed rules. This meant the farmers who'd taken the option that the govt threatened to remove would suddenly have to spend lots more money, really, really fast to stay in business.
The farmers don't of course have the multiple thousands available to change again quickly, nor will they get the necessary permits/consents from councils and government departments quickly. As a result, eggs are virtually unobtainable for the average consumer. The last few times I've been to the supermarket there have no eggs available to buy, regardless of price.

Just as well I don't eat a lot of eggs.
