It looks like it rubbed on a curb. Notice the arcs in both directions.

Loading in a car rack or a sliding crash in gravel, etc., etc., but really, I'm not sure it's worth pondering as it's there, doesn't appear to be fatal to the rim and just be careful not to put more scratches on it.

Sorry I was not clear the scratches are spread radially all around the entire wheel, this is just one photo which looks exactly like every other spot on the entire wheel. Generally they are all in the direction of the hub. I will try to get another photo up.

Flexion of the rim, possibly due to excessively heavy and prolonged load. Between that, and the condition of the spokes, I doubt it is road-worthy. I sure wouldn't want to ride that.

Wheel will be trashed but I would love to know what did this. Don't understand the looped scratches that extend 360º so not a crash.

Was possibly ridden through a crack between two slabs of pavement. I accidentally dropped into such a crack once while distracted by motorists going up an on-ramp to a bridge. I was able to bunny-hop out without crashing - lots of similar scratches in my aluminum rims afterward.

I don't think I'd pitch it. I might inspect it more frequently but it doesn't look badly-enough damaged to discard.

Does anyone remember Spirograph? This rim pattern reminds me of my old Spirograph set. This is one of the crazy things that kids would play with before PS2's, Wii's and other forms of screen based entertainment.
Spirograph wikipedia entry
It still looks like curb rash to me. And the scratches look like they are only in the gel coat so this should not affect the strength of the rim.

Spoke looks a little gnawed on. Chemical action too?

how about those cheap-o cement slabs with tire grooves that act as a bike rack? if previous owner had one at work or appt. complex, then dropped it in every day for weeks... just a guess.
