The Dutch are crazy

The bikes they're using are classic dutch single speeds, so it's on topic.

That has to be a blast and sucky at the same time. Hard to believe it's been 37 years now since I've been over there. I need to get back one day.

I've said a few times, how I never get a tailwind, always a headwind. Now I know what I've been training for. 🤪😋

Without even knowing Tom Scott did a video about it, I just knew the headwind contest would be front and center with any "the Dutch are crazy" headline,

Yep, maybe I get what little motivation I have from Moms side, VanReenan, pretty much Smith in Dutch which is my last name from Dads side, go figure.

Why not. It is not like there are mountain passes to have races up to. I think the biggest thing is to embrace what us cyclist hate. The spec' bike is interesting too.

I rewatch that and other videos on the headwinds contest just to keep things in context when I'm tempted to complain about riding on windy days in Texas. Makes our usual 15-20 mph winds with gusts to 30+ mph seem like a gentle breeze.

That is great, especially as it looks to be mostly regular joes doing it. I thought it was also Dutch but mostly looks to be in Belgium but check out strand racing. It looks to be the people who don’t race cyclocross in the winter race their bikes in the sand on the beaches.

It doesn't show up on any of my desktop browsers either. Had to use my phone (Android) browser to find out what this was about. Link: https ://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMinwf-kRlA

EDIT: had to add a space for it not to disappear as well.

The short race length helps.

47 years ago I had an 18 mile commute, up and over the Santa Monica mountains.
for those who might know, from Beverly Hills, up Benedict Canyon along a bit of Mulholland then down Coldwater Canyon, the Valley floor beyond. Typical was an hour, not bad including the climbing.
one night a stiff wind from the North, 45 mph with gusts up to 55.
it took near two hours, I was shattered.
it was small ring even descending, 42x17
the low gear at the time was 42x23.

Rode across that on my Brompton a few years back, apparently the wind is always terrible. Guy in velo-mobile passed me like I was standing still.
