Meat and sugar consumption are associated with bad health outcomes, but the data exist against a pervasive background of energy overload (kcal in > kcal out). Some experts suspect that’s the more basic problem.

I guess importance of nutrition/exercise for health is 95% nutrition/5% exercise. Who doesn't eat meat? I eat about once a week.
Is it a good bike?
You should read his book "The Complete Book of Running". He promoted a change in lifestyle, including no smoking and a balanced diet, not just exercise. His diet suggestions were not extreme (no 'keto', 'Atkins', or other fad diets), just eat a balanced diet and watch out for those excess calories from snacking. His family had a history of heart disease for quite a few previous generations so his early death back in the 1984 was not a complete surprise.

Excellent. Then I won't have to go to the trouble of putting you on my ignore list.

Happy trolling and fat-shaming with the time you have left.

I need to lose about 20 lb., I consider myself fat. I tried to delete this thread, but there is no Delete option. Moderators, please delete this thread, I didn't expect followers of Fixx here.

I'm not a follower of Fixx. I seem to remember the book title and his premature death, but the link between what he was advocating and his premature death is at best tenuous.

I think the picture of the guy riding the bike is what needs to be deleted. That isn't too cool, especially when you have it there for no purpose other than to invite ridicule.

BTW, is the %% in all of your titles designed to get the search utility to throw an error?

Maybe it was the wooden stakes he ate that killed him. Or were they aluminum or steel?

Happy New Year to you all!

I eat red meat 7 days per week, that's daily. Eating meat is great for maintaining healthy weight and muscle.

Jim Fixx:
  1. family history of heart attack and premature death
  2. was morbidly obese and a sedentary smoker at age 35
  3. was probably an out-of-control diabetic
  4. did not have a healthful diet
  5. autopsy - 3 coronary arteries almost completely blocked with plaque
  6. dead at age 52

Lessons:
  1. unstable plaque in coronary arteries causes heart attack and death
  2. exercise does not prevent formation of plaque
  3. faulty diet is primary cause for plaque formation
  4. exercise can stabilize plaque and reduce risk of them from breaking off

Eating red meat is also notorious for boosting your LDL cholesterol, the main contributor to heart disease.

Red meat is also pro-inflammatory, and high consumption has been linked to colon cancer.

I wasn't talking about eating cheeseburgers from MacDonalds and then loading up with milkshakes and desserts afterwards...I am talking about home cooking. How the meat is cooked and prepared and what it is combined with during a meal can make a difference if it's healthy or not.

It wasn't wrong type of food that killed him. It was a genetic predisposition to coronary heart disease that killed him. Too much running also aggravated his heart issues, not too mention many other different issues which he had in his personal life, which also caused a lot of extra stress on his already unhealthy cardiovascular system.

Read your post again (quoted above). I'm still quite alive and eating a pretty good balanced diet (I do cheat once in a while). Go find the book in your local library and read it, you'll probably find some of it to be enlightening if (as you say) you're trying to lose 20 lbs.

Human body needs movement and exercise...It's pointless to follow a healthy diet without being physically active.

I am of the belief that alcohol helps to keep the arteries clear of plaque. I have nothing to base that on except that I like beer, heck, I'm having a 9.5% abv I brewed a couple of months ago right now. Yummy!

Good point, thanks. Another important diet item: minimal saturated and trans fats.

So it seems those lifestyle things may shrink plaque by reducing LDL in the blood, thus "sucking out" the cholesterol deposits inside the plaque.

I believe that too...There was actually some studies done which concluded that moderate drinkers are healthier and live longer than complete teetotalers.

Mr. Fixx, had a predisposition or congenital heart defect. I used his running journal as a mid 20's long distance runner.
