Mix current shimano 105 5800 with Ultegra R8000?
Hello! I have a 2016 Trek Edmonds ALR 5 with shimano 105 group set. The rear derailleur broke (fell off my trainer!) and I was thinking about taking the opportunity to start slowly upgrading it. Could I install the Ultegra R8000 11 spd derailleur? It’s a different generation I think. It’s not very clear as to whether they can work together.
Thanks!
Thanks!

5800 was 11 speed, right? If so, you will be fine to swap for an 8000. You'll probably want the same cage length unless you are changing your gearing.

Unless you have an overwhelming sense of sentimentality to that bike, I'd be saving for a new bike and just maintaining the current bike.
The only thing that Ultegra will get you is less weight. Shimano 105 5800 shifts every bit as well or better than any Ultegra group of its time or since, IMO. IMHO.
I've got 105 5800 and Ultegra r8000 on two different bikes.

Only thing to consider is if you will ever want to put a 34 tooth on the cassette, then get the r8000 that can handle that

Most economical "upgrade" would probably be a RD-R7000. One of those with a new shift cable would probably shift better than an Ultegra replacement without a new shift cable.
