older Trek frame with band downtube shifters
I have a frameset that had old suntour ratcheting friction shifters that were band mounted to the downtube.
I want to throw it together with a 1x9 setup just because i have a 1x fsa crank setup narrow wide in the parts bin with a external bb......and i have a 9 or maybe its a 10sp wheelset here as well.
I know i can run just one side of the shifters but does anyone know if the other side can be removed and not look to bad? I know the shimano ones the little mounting nub comes out so it isnt sticking out. Perhaps these do as well. Im almost certain one of those problem solver covers for the frame brazed nubs wouldnt work.
Maybe the bank on SunRace friction shifters would work and come apart to remove left side as well. Those are a bit more generic and only about $14. Id like to stick with the suntours just because those ratcheting shifters are fantastic. IM pretty sure the sunrace ones are probably junk. I just thought it would be fun to try 1x for a while since i had the parts.

I think there were some band clamp style shifter bosses on vintage bikes that were 1-sided, but aside from Huret, I don't know who else made them. I/we don't know where you live at least as far as major metropolitan areas are concerned, thus we don't know your level of access to half-forgotten stashes of vintage bits and pieces. It's going to be easier to just let that left/non-drive side boss roll commando and rock 1x for super cheap and easy. It's on the non-drive side, so you're totally set for (proper) photos. Win-win.

Or how about getting really creative, and covering it with the other shift lever? No one will notice that it's not connected to anything, and it preserves the look.

Search on E-Bay for "5-speed downtube shifter".
I'm seeing:
Huret,
Simplex
Campagnolo,

You're not going to find better friction shifters than those ratcheting suntours.
