Fantastic read. Thanks for posting this. I've custom built a few 38T Perfect and ProCompe freewheels. Personally I prefer the 6 speed models in order to keep the tooth jumps all to 4 or 5, i.e. 16-20-25-30-34-38 or 15-20-25-30-34-38. I realize I've sacrificed my high end for speed, but see it more as an opportunity to rest.

I have a set of these on my Ross MTB, having bought them new-in-bag on e-bay, but they should have been what was originally on the bike.
The front is especially peculiar in that the inner cage plate pivots upward on the upshift. That is, the two cage plates aren't mounted rigid to one another. Then, the cable is bolted in a fixed position and the housing stop moves while shifting, so one needs to be sure that it can move freely when setting it up, especially with more rigid modern housing.
I've only ever seen the RD mounted with the claw, which is how mine came, but my Ross doesn't have an integrated hanger, so that worked out in my favor.

Picked up a couple rears in a parts lot recently but the cages and other protuberances are bent in various places, to the point I can't really tell what's good and what's not. I may try to work through that at some point, but for now they're going in the rando-parts-bin in case I or the co-op happens to have someone needing some oddball piece.
