Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Been away for about 5-6 years...what have I missed?

I've been away from cycling completely for about 5 years. I was a regular on this forum and this is my first post since 2016. After watching my beloved road bike sitting the corner of the garage for years just wasting away I decided to give it another go. Dropped it off at the local shop today for a complete overhaul and am looking to get back in the saddle. One thing I have noticed is that cyclocross disk brakes are all the rage now instead of rim brakes. What else have I missed?

We’re up to, what, 13 speed cassettes now? At least on mountain bikes, where everyone wants just one (tiny) chainring. Road bikes still use two or sometimes three chainrings. And I think road bikes are still “only” at 12 speeds.

Oh, and lots of folks are going to tubeless tires, even on the road. Also, 25mm is now considered a skinny tire.

Derailers that work with a mechanical cable are starting to be thought of as quaint and archaic. Ditto the brakes, where everything is now becoming hydraulic.

I just came back from about 8 years off, and they're apparently still arguing about tire width and rolling resistance.
