It should, it just won't shift into first. You'll be able to use the 2/3/4 as an AW.
I don't think it's physically possible to pull the cable travel necessary, given the position of the first gear detent. Maybe it's possible to make it work by drilling a third hole and running the cable slack, but I wouldn't bet on it. Remember that the FWs require a fair amount of leverage too.

Thanks Kurt, for the insights. I believe I will purchase it just for some future build which suits my future island riding. I will be, after all, living down the road from historic British fort. I'll need an English bike for sophisticated leisurely riding!
