I believe that is a fender mount.

Also, the bike I posted wasn't specifically aimed at you, I know it's too short, but it was relevant to the topic and maybe you got someone else craving one.

The fenders I've ordered won't reach that, at least I don't believe.

Get a longer threaded bolt, a nut or two, and a washer or two. My 620 has the same thing, though not threaded, which sucks as there's no tool access on the other side. My original Trek 620 build thread had me buying a 100mm all-thread bolt, cutting 20mm off of it (after measuring) and then doing a bunch of shenanigans to get the fender base to mount securely. Usually the chain stay bridge (where there's a hole for fender mounting on bikes with fender eyelets) is a lot closer, if not too close depending on how large a tire you can run. My 620 is the exact opposite of that. Thanks, Trek!

If not threaded and no tool access on the other side then…?

I should have clarified that it was no correct tool access. I needed an 8mm wrench to fit in there and be able to rotate to loosen/tighten. There wasn't enough room. I had to use needle nose pliers as my "wrench" and even then I had minimal purchase on the nut and could only rotate it ~30°.

I just used a short threaded bolt and ran that through- then a long threaded spacer, then ran a bolt through the fender into the spacer.

Thank you for sharing this picture, I believe I already own this hardware, so I should be good there.

I wanted to go for as clean a look as I could, even if I used a washer that wasn't more discreet (from the hardware bin I have, not going to a store). I did nail the fender line though.

I picked up a Velo Orange Copenhagen kickstand which works good but it will interfere with mounting the fenders, didn’t realize that when I ordered it. Ordered a Nitto Dirt Drop stem to offset the size. Hopefully it helps. The fenders will be here Monday, new tires by Friday. I’m thinking I’ll get everything as good as I can then take it to my LBS to see if they can help me get it dialed in. They did a Trek Precision fit on another bike so they have all my measurements and should be able to help somewhat.

I picked up some marathons for the wheel set that came with it as a backup since I know these tires well enough to feel any nuances. (Or that’s my perception anyway.)

I got the new Nitto dirt drop stem on and it feels fantastic. Now I’m prepared to focus on the brakes, drivetrain, and fenders.

I'm thinking #95 or #A9... But I'm open to suggestions.
Do better quality housings and cables make a big enough difference to justify the cost? I love the looks of the Jagwire Carbon Silver braided housing and am wondering if its worth it or if I should just buy the basics..

Don't go crazy on cables if your ultimately looking for a larger frame. (Leave em long). Glad your feeling fantastic on the bike now but ...

I plan to leave the cables long enough to allow for 57cm vs this 55, but in the same token, I am planning to build this bike to use it. I have several other bikes (13 including family members in my garage) so my thought is to buy bulk cable and housings. Normally I have bought shimano cables individually from my LBS but I’m thinking if there’s a difference worth investing in I’ll buy it.

Depending on what level of Shimano stuff you're getting, it will do plenty well for you (I would imagine any level of cable set that Shimano sells in a kit would be up to snuff). Jagwire offers several different levels as well, so comparing the best Jagwire to the 'worst' Shimano offering and there certainly could be a difference. Jagwire gets you many color options, which can be really cool. Their housings are also a slightly larger diameter than the standard housings offered from Shimano et al, so keep that in mind as your top tube cable guides may not like that too much (more effort to fit through required).

I'm 500 in, it doesn't scare me to drop another 3-5 to get it to a fun user. No, I'm not looking for a museum piece or a race winner. Just something that's fun to run 30-50 miles through whatever I may find myself in.

When I find a comparable 57 then I'll swap it out and flip the frame. But so far what I've found is pretty junky.

I dropped it at my LBS for an overall check and having them redo the cables, housings and tape.

Yes, That's kind of what I went with a color that has a darker chrome tint, reminds me of Titanium.
