Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was really pissed with I went to LBS to look at the helmets on sale. Maybe they treat guys better. The jerk never asked me what my price range was or what I was looking for (I was looking for white helmet) and he kept saying try this one. Most were too large for my head and the twit kept saying that the rear fitting system just needed adjusting. I wanted to ask him if he would be insulted if he were looking for shoes and I brought him shoes two sizes too large and told him to just tie them tighter. If that were the case, all helmets would be "one size fits all". Needless to say, I refuse to buy a helmet from that store.

Bought a nearly NOS Campagnolo NR rear derailleur for the refit on my Ron Cooper and yesterday picked up some Michelin Lithion 2 folding tyres in 700:23 to replace the old Michelin HI Lites.

Derailleur set me back a whopping $5.00 and new tyres were $80.00... am pretty pleased with all the new old bits.

Also picked up a pair of Shimano 600 tri-colour hubs and front and rear derailleurs for the refit on my Proctor... will be 8 or 9 speed SIS instead of 8 speed friction when I get things finished. Will keep things period correct unless I end up buying some Ultegra brifters and don;t go with indexed dt shifters or bar ends.

Finally got a computer, Bontrager Node 1.1. I didn't need anything fancy, just basic cadence and mph.

My Specialized has been making some weird clicking noise when I pedal. I checked the derailluer adjusments and everything was fine. I bought a new chain and bottom bracket and replaced my Look pedals. I figure the pedals and BB have 6-7K miles on them and the chain was at least a year old. I also cleaned/lubed everything while I was at it. Taking it for it's first real ride tonight.

Also, I am building an aluminum road bike out of a flat black frame….so I ordered a Salsa seat post, stem, tape and a front derailleur mounting bracket. I think I have everything except the cables.

Thanks for the info. Is that what you've experienced or what you've heard?

Pedals should last much longer than 6-7k miles. Mine have 20k or so and they are still going strong. It would suck to have to replace pedals every year.

Good quality pedals can be rebuilt or have sealed bearings... they can get contaminated and cruddy over a lot of riding and a rebuild can do wonders to smooth them out.

Yeah, that's what I thought on the pedals, but I figured I needed a set for my aluminum build if that didn't fix the problem.

Thanks for letting me know. I do get a fair bit of cross chaining. I had a local bike shop put that chain on for me and never questioned it. Noob mistake. I'll have my new shop fix that for me. thanks for the info

Not a criticism, Padley. There was a recent thread about a chain too tight, something to do with KMC chains, I think. What you have there should considerably limit the life of the chain and RD.
