Nice. It looks like what I have suspected all along - why dump capital into developing hardware in a market that would crush you? Develop the software and move the business into the existing mobile device market. All this market needs as far as hardware is a decent non-eBay/Chinese/infomercial mount for the smartphone.
As far as this upgrade, getting rid of the antiquated display looks much better

As a Garmin dealer - I have yet to receive any info.
As a consumer....I am sure there are many who are now happy that they can update strava while riding.

apparently with the app, you can now "follow" the riders and see their location from your home computer. That would kinda come in handy if i'm out on the parkway and a lightning storm hits, like it's done several times this past year, and i had to call for a ride home. Might also be cool if the pro peleton was using them and we could see their location in real time.

I did notice that and as a father of 2 - I know that would be a nice feature for my family to have available so they know where to go looking for my body when I eventually get run down by a car.

Some cell phones already allow you to do that WITHOUT the Edge (see video, which is 2 years old). So why bother with a pricey upgrade?

I have mixed feelings. After reading some reviews, Garmin seems to be holding back on dropping new technology in favor of catching other countries up with the current Garmin offerings.
LiveTracking certainly isn't new either. I remember when team HTC used HTC phones during the Tour de France so people could live track their position, heart rate, power output, etc a few years ago.
As far as upgrading, I think I'll keep my eyes on the Edge 800 for a price drop. Otherwise, I'll probably be waiting for the 900 (?) - the Edge 810 predecessor. Garmin did a similar move to their Forerunner series with the 405 then the 405CX. It was marketed as a "new watch", but they only made one minor change (I think it was increased water resistance or something). Hopefully this is the dull Garmin Edge upgrade and we'll get something great to follow it up (Garmin went on to release the Forerunner 610 - which takes running watches much further).

the only positive thing I can see from this is that I can now buy an 800 for cheaper

One new significant feature IMO is the ability to have 10 bikes and save multiple different screen-setups per bike based on activity type. That's nice. The rest: Meh...

I just got the 500 with HR & Cadence for $250 at Thanksgiving. Not upset that I'll be using the "old" model for a couple of years. However, I do like the ability to support multiple bikes and bike types. I have four (road, CX, single speed & mountain). And the CX does multiple duty for off-road, commuter and road riding. Would be a nice bonus to be able to track those things separately. In fact, that was my only disappointment when I got the 500 that it was limited to three bikes.

What I don't like is that it only works with Apple or android. I use Windows Phone
Just kidding... well at least about the sad part. I have an 800 and it's the bomb.
