Dating Zipp Wheels

Hi

I picked up a set of used Zipp 303s that I am trying to date and any info or resources would be appreciated. The free hub body doesn’t have any markings, but etched on the rear hub shell are numbers 188 11 172 0256. I assume that indicates 188 11 speed hubs but thought Zipp 11 speed hubs had 11spd etched on the freehub body. I was also wondering if the 172 0256 might be a date code. The rims are carbon with alloy brake track and just marked Zipp 303 Speed weaponry. TIA for any info.

Edited: Added some pics; a little worried about nicks in the body but figured I would take em for a spin before exploring freehub body replacement.

A few tips that could be useful, some clearly more than others

1. Focus on the present, not the past
2. Talk about the future early on
3. Make sure you’re attracted to the wheels, not the idea of a relationship
4. Don’t skip the sex talk!
5. Meet each other’s friends
6. Don’t have important conversations over text
7. Be yourself
8. Actually enjoy it
9. Don’t worry about labels (to a certain extent)
10. Red flags aren’t suggestions (and aren’t going to go away)
11. Spend some time apart
12. Stop bringing up your ex
13. Relationships aren’t 50/50–they’re 100/100
14. Communicate how you feel often
15. Actions matter more than words

Here's a Zipp archive page with some limited info. Check the 2009 offerings as it has a polished hub and lists an 88/188 model number as part of the I.D. Zipp Road Wheel Timeline | SRAM

They are really old and worn. My wife loves her LLBean points, most likely. I got them 20 years ago for xMas.....a bit older than the wheels. I just retired the wheels. My wife wants me to retire the shoes, too.

I have a pair just like that, with about 100,000 miles on them. I was thinking about getting rid of them this year. Nah, I will keep them one more year.

I had a really, really bad crash on them last September. I broke up with them. "It isn't you, it is me" was my angle. Besides, I had the perfect excuse to get new wheels. Some of us will do anything for new gear.

This was helpful. It at least confirms that the wheels are pre2012 because Zipp stopped making the silver shells in 2012. But I am thinking now that the 11 in the serial number etched in the shell (188 11 172 0256) for model year 2011, not 11 speed. This is because the guy who gave me the wheels told me he had a hub failure and Zipp rebuilt the wheels under warranty in 2011. The front hub serial number begins 088 08, so I am wondering if the wheels were originally 2008 and then a new rear hub was added in 2011. What is confusing me is that the guy swears they are shimano/sram 11 speed, which is possible since Dura Ace 11 speed came out in 2010, but I can’t find anything indicating Zipp made 11 speed freehub bodies for shimano before 2013. I don't want to buy 11 speed casette for the wheels if I cant confirm its an 11 speed freehub. It doesn't appear that 10 speed version of Zipp 188 hub would be convertible to 11.

I think Ghostrider62 thought I put 100,000 miles on Zipps, I was talking about my LLBeans. Love the Beans but they are so wore out.
