How the heck does Scott get their CR1 frames so light?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Very strong or very stiff? The one comment I keep hearing about the CR1 is that if the bike goes down...it doesn't come back up in one pc. I almost got one of the Mavic neutral service bikes which are CR1s outfitted with Centaur but when I kept reading they break in any sort of fall I decided my $2k was better spent elsewhere.

Sin just get one already. They are sweet bikes, pull the trigger. Or get a Litespeed

The CR1 does not break in a fall, I dont know where you are getting this but take it from somebody who owns one. The CR1 is a breaktrough in carbon frame design. After riding just about everything the CR1's ride, weight and feel hooked me. On a scale of 1-10, i give it an 11!!!!

Yeah.. Lets not start up rumors. I highly doubt those bikes are that fragile. I have a look 585 which doesnt weigh much more than the scott bike. I dont think it would break in a crash.. however I don't plan on testing that notion out.

I implore you not to get anything without riding it for a while first. With that said you definitly dont want a scott, it is a really different ride than a standard bike. I would say play it safe and get a trek, if I were you.

It's those damn German engineers! Anal attention to detail, thinking they have an unlimited budget. Take a look at the designs of Porsches, BMWs and Mercedes (pre-Chrysler). As already presented in charts numerous times elsewhere, carbon-fibre is much, much stiffer per pound than any other material, so you can use a lot less of it for the equivalent stiffness. However, strength & failure modes are a completely different consideration...

Well one of the sources of that confirmed that info was my LBS...who happens to be a Scott dealer. Maybe they make more money on Specialized (I assume they do) but a personal friend (i.e. not just the guy I deal with when I go in there) is the GM and the one that said it was true. Maybe you love yours...maybe you have crashed it and it is fine...maybe you got lucky. I don't know...maybe I should have gotten the Mavic/Scott CR1 for <$2k...it sure looked like a good deal.

How about the Storck Scenario CD's?

One of the wrenches at my LBS has CD 1.1, and he says it's the stiffest carbon frame he has ever ridden.

I just read a report that the SCOTT CR-1 recieved an award for having the Strongest and most lightweight frame built!

Maybe that was old though.

EDIT: here's the link

Strange..I'm a style guy when it comes to guitars and bikes and that's why I have a Serious Jones for a steel lugged frame, but I find myself attracted to the Darth Vader carbon weave look of this bike and at 1/2 the price of a custom steel bike...I'm nuts..

No for sure they are hot looking bikes, light and stiff. Maybe my sources are wrong.

I am attracted to the 'Vader' look also and to me it apeals even more with a set of triple spoked carbon Nimble wheels. The bright yellow script on the Team Issue is not stealthy enough for me and I prefer the 05 Limited weave and script color.

Whatever you do, don't get a Canondale Six13. Only American idiots ride those (like me). And zero bling.

Get a Litespeed. Excellent idea. Be sure it's a $6,000+ Ghisallo. My buddy let me ride his and it was like riding a parking meter post.

I heard they're so light that they can float all the way to the moon if you hit a big bump. I swear it's true. My best friend's uncle knows this guy that was talking to this wrench of a former ex pro that owns a LBS and said he actually saw it happen.

You know my unabashed hatred for Litespeeds. They are garish, cold-looking over-priced geezer bikes, not as light as carbon nor as sexy as steel. What's the point? ,

I have just bought a six13 pro frame and put all my former components on to it. Great ride. Not that light but light enough for me 8kgs. That carbon tube absorbs the shock so well. I have the best position on this bike compared to any other road bike I have used. Why do you dislike the six13. Are you referring to the 06 one?

I've seen pros crash with Cr1's at 35 mph, they are strong as hell. However, they are not the lightest, Cervelo's new R3 is 870g. Carbon frames breaking is total ignorant BS. Regardless, both Scott and Cervelo have lifetime warranties.
