When was this Colnago made?

Hi,

I hoping someone here could help me figure out when this frame was made. The shop I picked it up from said it's roughly late 90s or early 2000s. From my googling the most I could find was the frame from some archived ebay listing that had identified as a 2002. Threadless stem, carbon fork, and brifters make me think it's from 2000 up but I am no expert on this sort of thing. All I saw was a Colnago for a decent price so I grabbed it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

UPDATE:
Contacted Colnago directly (thanks to "jet sanchEz" for suggesting). Apparently it's a Colnago Classic 2002 model (photo Colnago sent me attached). The original would have come with an aluminum fork, so either the original bike shop offered the flash carbon fork as an upgrade or the previous owner upgraded at a later date. I still don't know what the tubing is. From the photo Colnago emailed me I could make out that it is Columbus steel but don't know the exact spec. I asked them if they could provide that info and if they happen to have a copy of the full catalog from that year.

Thanks again for all that responded!

IS that 9 speed campagnolo? The Ergos aren't as pointy as I think of 8, but the thumb levers don't quite look like 10 speed to me (could be wrong on that). That might help you narrow it down if the parts are original. Nice looking, regardless.

If it is full Centaur Century Grey, it was only made around 2005, very 10 speed.
Frame set itself is slightly earlier ~2000.

ETA Never seen the alloy compact in that finish b.t.w.

OK, I'm used to the smoother hoods on the later 10 speed, that's what confused me into thinking it was newer. Good call on the finish.

Team Casino used these colours on their Colnago frames in the 1998 season, possibly other seasons.

I'm thinking 2000 or so also with some of the components being a bit newer very nice bike. Pretty sure the hood's are slightly heaver cush replacement hoods which may seem to be put dating off.. Pretty sure a lot of component's are not original no big deal since they all look good and go nicely with the bike.

Yes that's 9 speed campagnolo centaur! And thanks I'm happy with it no matter what year it's from… I'd just love to know as much about its history as possible.

Yes all Centaur (brakes, crank set, rear derailleur, brifters) with the exception of the front derailleur which is Veloce… Brifters and rear cassette are 9 speed.

Yes, your model is a Colnago Classic model so wouldn't have had a super expensive paint job like the Master or C40 of that era would have had.

Here's a pic of a Master Extra Light that I used to own, there were probably 15 or more different colours used on this frame

That's a nice one! What year did you get yours? I'm guessing mine is roughly from the same period. Right now I don't have much to go on other than it was probably made between 1995-2005. I'm hoping to narrow that date range down a bit and learn as much about the history of the bike as I can. Thanks for replying!

2003…

My 2003 Master Extra Light is similar, came with a straight Colnago carbon fork, 1” threadless. It’s a blue/yellow fade, Art Decor Competition. I replaced the fork with a chrome Precisa, noticed little of the weight gain but I like it better anyway.

There we’re so many color combinations, it would be hard to determine a year by the color.

I was told the Masters had the rider painted on it. I’ve seen two red Classics; they looked a lot like that, but were fades. I have an ‘85 Master, no rider painted on it.

The Century Grey was very nice. Not only pretty, but also came in compact 50/34.
The cassette (in 10-speed) came in 12-30, so it was a climb-capable setup.
I don’t know why, but those Ergos were lighter shifting than anything Campy I’ve had, until SR 11.

Yeah I was getting no where by searching the frame's color scheme (as you said… so many variations). I was able to date it between 2001-2004 based on the carbon fork. According to this site the Flash fork was only made between 2001-2004. That is only accurate, of course, if it is the original fork.

Thanks for responding!

Yeah I was thinking maybe I'd like to update the groupset eventually, but right now it works well enough for my fitness level. The shifting it fairly smooth with minor adjustments I made… although it's a little finicky when I'm on the large chainring and the 8th gear. Can't quite figure out what the issue is.

Thanks for replying!
