Wow - 50mm carbon clinchers

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wow - 50mm carbon clinchers

edit: should read carbon TUBULARS

Just saw these while surfing ebay uk - they look the business, though not sure of the quality. The guy runs an ebay shop - Carbon Accessory and it appears the goods are shipped from Taiwan. Not that I have issues with where they're coming from, it's just that they're damn cheap (£300) for a 1530g, 50mm profile carbon wheelset...

So has anyone used these wheels before... or should I be the beta tester?

I don't think these are clinchers.

Unless there was a different auction, the description said they were tubulars. I did see an auction for 38mm carbon clinchers.

havn't heard of them before, but it is nice to see a thick weave on wheels.

Those are tubulars. My wife has a wheel sponsorship from them for CX racing. They weigh 1580 grams real world. Not bad wheels really. They are worth the ebay price just to reuse the rims with some better spokes and hubs. One really nice thing is they have exposed nipples. Hidden nipples, especially on tubular rims, is just ********.

Ah, my bad. Still, £300 ($600) is pretty tempting even for tubs slightly on the heavy side.

Sounding positive. OK, this is going on my 'to consider seriously list'.

they are probably rebadged tokens, the hubs are the big question.

Do they have removeable decals/stickers?

Decals are under the clear coat... so you can't remove them. The stock hubs are NovaTec. The rear hubs are a little heavy.. but the front isn't bad. I beleive they use DT Comp spokes on the front and NDS rear. The rear DS were straight guage if I remember correctly. We tore two sets of them apart for the rims and kept one stock. The rebuilt wheels with DT Swiss hubs and CX Ray spokes are ~1300 grams, so the rims are fairly light. These are some good wheels for the price that guy is selling them for. Also remember the bit about having exposed nipples... the ones from BD are internal nipples.

are there tests showing how much benefit a 50mm wheel helps over a standard wheel?
like in terms of speed with same power or same speed with less power type charts?

plain jane aerodynamic drag numbers doesn't help visualizing the benefit

a lot of the numbers are slightly different from different studies, and i am not sure of any that use the same rim/hub/spoke as this wheel. consistently, though, the studies have shown there to be advantages.

i was a non-believer at first, but the research seems undeniable that there is a substantial advantage to aero rims. the tour magazine study which was conducted at 0 degree yaw (not very real world, but at least ball park) said the shimano carbon 50 (50mm rim) has an 11 watt advantage over the more standard mavic es.

slowtwitch.com has a lot of stuff on aero properties of wheels (joshatzipp or joshfromzipp is a good poster if you drink the zipp coolaid - i do). if asgelle shows up, he/she (not sure) has lots of info about this stuff also.

Aren't token's just gigantex rims...

Seems like 450ish for the BD set would be a better deal.

Gigantex makes rims for a lot of people. Novatech is Joytech. Novatech also makes wheels. My team has raced on them all season and they are pretty good.

The Novatech wheels have rims from Gigantex, Sapim spokes and Joytech hubs. These wheels look to fall into the same category.

Worth considering.

thanks, and i do believe there is an advantage i would just like to know some more practical numbers like at 200watts i get x mph more or something with same rider and such...
