Vintage racing bicycle frame manufacturer?

I have bought an old vintage racing bike frame and wanted to know the maker so I can restore the frame to original specification.
I have noticed that the pump would be mounted behind on the seat post tube and the rear brake mounting tube has a vertical hole.

Pictures posted in my album, hopefully someone knows about the frame, I think it's a British manufacturer, the chainset is totally wrong, by the looks of it would be a 3 or 5 speed.

No real idea on the maker and may be just the angle buy looks like a very long TT and short CT's.

Agree with British looking and that with orange always makes me think Holdsworth but really just spitballin.

Might be pretty old with those stamped RDO's and non standard slots.

Surely someone will straighten me out.

WOW! That's a real project and very much an effort appreciated by most of the members of this forum. Looks like your bottom bracket is intact. As you wait for the determination of this bikes species its probably a good idea to get it stripped and blasted so you can conduct a thorough investigation of the frames external and internal condition.

Also there is a following that it would be best to, after internal inspection, slap enough components on it to get it ridding and leave the patina as is... Ha

lug pattern: NERVEX 45/159

shell: NERVEX 158-159

dropouts: NERVEX 1008

brake bridge: NERVEX 500 series
vertically drilled bridge not that unusual; most makers of caliper brakes offered hardware mounts for this arrangement; Altenburger, CLB, GB, MAFAC, Weinmann, etc.

pump pegs: NERVEX Ref. 848

note that chain stays appear to be rapier pattern

date bracket: mid-fifties to early sixties

no guesses as to maker

MauriceMoss

---

chainset by Etablissements Peyrard (NERVAR); no earlier than 1976 so much later than cycle

note three and one half threads showing on adjustable bottom bracket cup
bottom bracket assembly evidently cadged together from random bits

pedals are Lyotard model 36R

Fork needs to be studied- the crown race region looks odd- shows a brass fillet, non standard practice.

I would really want to look inside the steerer to examine if the steerer to crown has been repaired- my guess brass was added- now the question is why.

needs to be milled or turned back for a crown race. Double check the length available for a headset to fit.

My first thought was Holdsworth due to the colour, but Im not so sure, I have to question if its original paint as the marking doesnt seem that great where the black is on the seat tube, but no signs of any other colours after a quick visual inspection.

I have found a fracture crack on the seat tube below the cut line and on the rear tube where someone has totally crushed the tube to allow for a double chain ring. Looks like my mig welder will need to be employed to sort those out. I think with the amount of work the frame will require a full respray will be in order, once I find out the original colour scheme or may do a custom paint job.

we cannot rule out the possibility it may have been fitted with a multi-plateau drive train when ex-works

cycle gets back into the era of manual front mechs which came on some new machines as late as 1961

When I saw the NERVEX on the BB frame section I didnt question the asking price of £25. Amazing information and knowledge thank you. I will hunt the internet at racing bikes of that era to see if I can find one similar.

see nothing to suggest a Holdsworthy origin for the frameset

sometimes a manufacturer will have a signature feature which is like a flashing beacon for identification but no such clue present here, at least that i am able to see

other times it can be a particular combination of features which are individually unremarkable but when take together indicate a marque specific

---

have you found any marking on the steerer? for example, is serial repeated there?

you could check the interior of the head tube to see if there is evidence of headplate fastener holes being filled in

what is the spacing for wheels? is rear 120mm or is it less? is front 100mm or is it 89mm?

other readers far more knowledgeable shall be along anon to give more and better assistance

Please bear in mind how thin the tubing is to begin with and how much more so it may be with rust and taking a beating.

I would want to very carefully fill it in to strengthen and reinforce the damage already done.
