Loud noises on first inflation new CF wheels

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Loud noises on first inflation new CF wheels

The several noise sounded nothing like I expect with tire bead seating, and at low pressure (<60 psi). The wheels run true and no evidence of problem. After this I feared but I have NOT heard amplified wheel sounds riding-. as is suggested with some CF wheels. I can find not mention of wheels doing this. Windspace hyper 38mm rim brake.

I generally only inflate my tires, not my wheels.

possible spoke seating? If they were not tension and stressed properly, they could be releasing that stress. I had that on new wheels in the past, generally, alloy, but not sure if it would happen to carbon.

I wouldn’t worry about any weird noises the first time you inflate a tire on the wheel, the first 50 feet of riding, or the first time you hammer out some high wattage to climb a steep hill... with whatever rim material. Any sounds that continue or reappear might be of concern.

And here I thought they were inflatable when tubeless tape was installed!

My CF wheels will make a big pop sometimes more than once when they finally seat at 10 lbs more than riding pressure. That's normal for my Boyd 60's and 5000s.

Tubeless or tubed?
I ask because there was a poster on here a few months back that destroyed a cheap set of generic carbon wheels after trying to seat a tubeless tire on them. The wheels were not in fact tubeless ready.

I get loud noises when I inflate my new tires on alloy wheels. I wouldn't be surprised if CF rims were a different sound and maybe even louder.

I almost always inflate and deflate my tube and tires three times when one is new just to make sure things untwist or get into their proper position.

Edit: for the sticklers...
I inflate my new tires three times and deflate them twice. <grin>

If you thought the inflation sounds were loud, wait.

If the wheels were poorly built - not fully stress-relieved and tensioned - they will indeed pop and ping while riding down your driveway. But if that's the issue with the OP's wheels, it'll be easy to see, since they will be out-of-true.

Winspace Hyper owner here (50mm, disc); I'm familiar with the noise you speak of, and experience it every tube/tire change.
IMO, sounds like pretty standard CF rim bead seating. I'm 10,000km and several tire changes deep with no issues. I wouldn't worry about it!

Edit: unrelated, but when you get a chance, yank the freehub off and grease the pawls. This should alleviate the ticking issue faced by virtually all Hyper owners at the 4,000km mark.

The sounds are terrifying, and completely normal.
