David Dill/Arrowhead and Taconite trails MN near Lake Vermilion

We're taking a trip to Lake Vermilion in a few weeks, and I noticed the David Dill/Arrowhead trail and Taconite trails are near the lake so figured I would bring a bike to ride it some instead of a trainer for workouts while up there. Any advice on what the trail looks like (dirt, gravel, single track, mud etc) and tires to use? I can put 40mm gravel tires on my gravel bike or road tires or something in between. Do I need a permit or something to ride it?
