I just sent my daughter to school with a much older brownie for some show and tell your old crap thing. I think it was a model 6-20 something. Looked like this without the flash: Kodak Brownie Flash Six-20 Camera Information | The Brownie Camera Page

Call me insecure, but as someone who grew up in NYC I feel very uncomfortable hiking deep into the woods out of cell phone reach. Mrs BD, having grown up in the Hudson Valley, has trouble understanding that, which is one of the reasons we disagree about dog ownership. She's not fond of owning a dog but I insist, because I'm not exploring the woods without at least one big dog with me.

Knee warmers and long socks. Those knee warmers have to go. I mean, look at them, one of them started falling down half way thru the race. So annoying.

I really need to find a way to decouple my brain from my hand's response mechanism to my alarm.
Every time I've tried to wake up at ~5:30 in the last couple weeks, my alarm will go off and I'll snooze it without realizing it until 7ish, at which point it's too late to get a good ride in.
I put my phone under my pillow so it only wakes me up, but my hand just reaches under and pushes the silence button over and over. Gotta try something different. It's probably also my subconscious reminding me that I still hate riding in the predawn cold.

I neglected to tell you guys about the unique experience we had on our recent cruise. It was awesome in the true (not overused) sense of the word. This from today's St Maarten thread.
One of these days I might try to load the whole video.
I was just there in December 2016. Was on an eight port cruise, and of all of them St Maarten was the only island where I saw roadies cycling. I saw two different groups of kitted up roadies the day I was there, indicating to me there might be a bike shop coordinating local rides perhaps.
Are the roads safe? I would say no, not for a rider inexperienced at riding in those conditions: no shoulders, narrow heavily traveled roads. But on the other hand I sensed that daily drivers did not find the cyclists unusual, which is always a plus. The guys I saw were obviously not intimidated by the traffic conditions.
As for the beach where the planes come in low, that's Maho beach, literally about 50 feet from the end of the runway. The beach itself is crap, it's only about 75 feet wide, but everybody flocks there for the planes. *I* went for the planes too.
This is a still from a video I took of a big plane taking off. It's a pretty other-worldly experience ... after the plane had left my wife and I stood there slack-jawed, looking at each other, brushing sand out of our hair and trunks, both thinking the same thing, "Did we just do that"? Notice the conspicuous warning signs posted along the fence where those guys are holding on. It's pretty safe, but play at your own risk.
I wanted to stay and wait for a big plane coming in for a landing too, but the beach was so rowdy and crappy that I just couldn't take it for long. Left and went to a much nicer beach.
