We had a very breezy fun ride today. 100% fun, but prolly time to put the Reynolds wheels away for the year.

Beautiful day for a ride yesterday, but it's getting darker and darker when I get back to the car every day. It's time to do my annual spreadsheet, using sunset times to back-calculate when I have to stop work in order to get back to the car before it's too dark. Then comes Standard Time and that's the end of riding outside after work. Which I guess means I need to get that reflector glued onto the flywheel of the Snap.

I made the mistake of playing around with the STI position on the bars on the Litespeed. I thought they might be angled up just a bit too much, so I loosened the screws and moved them around the curve just a bit, making them closer to completely level. Then I took them for a Sunday long ride and felt really stretched out on the hoods. Bad idea, to make such a change before a long ride and be stuck with it the whole way! So before Tuesday's ride, I loosened the stem clamp and rotated the bars up just a little. On that ride, I was still stretched out too far, but not as bad.

So Tuesday night I said to myself, "You're an idiot. It was working fine till you dicked around with it! Put it back how it was!" So I did, and Wednesday's and last night's ride, All Was Right With The World. Lesson learned - if it ain't broke.....

My wife and I both got the Fluzone High-Dose Quadrivalent vaccine for old people yesterday and it has kicked our butts. We both have had headaches, lethargy, etc. I tried to ride and bailed out after a few miles. We’ve both been napping all day. Interwebs says 1-3 days of possible grief.

I spent some time today calculating my total mileage so far this year.

• 4917 total, including virtual miles
• 3832 real world miles
• 1085 virtual miles

Of all the real world miles, 2000 have been on the Litespeed in its various iterations. That tells you how much I like the Litespeed!!! This is ahead of last year's total, which is pretty good, since last year was by far the most miles I'd done in a year. I'm superstitious, so I'm not going to set any goals or make any predictions.

Some of my friends are out of town and I went to the club to do a 46 mile ride. 3000 feet of climbing all in the center 20ish miles. In other words, some steep climbs. Also, steep descents, which is where I got dropped. Lots of turns and at some point I couldn't see anyone and I didn't have a route sheet and I didn't remember where the break was. I cruised around Beverly Hills for a while and eventually asked a couple women who were walking if they knew where Franklin Canyon was, (I remembered that part). One lady pulled it up on her phone and gave me excellent directions. She also expressed doubt that I would be able to ride a bicycle up there.

I thought the group would catch up to me on the climbs but apparently they lingered at the break for a long time and I went on alone. Back in the valley I stopped at a friend's house. Haven't seen him since before 2020. This is the guy who used to ride 25K miles a year in the early 90s. He has a bone disease and can no longer ride a road bike. We swapped stories of the old days and I was very glad to have stopped there.

There are some other people I really need to visit. I should get on that.

Cycle Cross race is tomorrow. I leave vegas in an hour. Should get be able to get to my house by 11 am after the commute home. Gives me time to change and rush to the race. I’ve been asleep since 10 am so I’m hoping I’ll still feel rested tomorrow afternoon.

Yesterday I saw the lady I helped with the seat mast trouble 3 weeks ago. She was at the start but did a different ride but we did talk for a few minutes. She ended up buying a new mast for $200 because she wanted zero offset. I don't like the design and I wonder how many grams it saves. Do you get to pick the offset when you buy the bike or does it come with one and you have to buy a different one if you need it? It's a new Emonda.

Whoever set it up for her did it wrong and on top of that the saddle clamp was loose enough to tilt way up on a climb and then it was stuck and we couldn't rotate it back. I rotated the mast 180 degrees to get the saddle level so she could ride home. My friend found an on-line article where they said you have to knock the rotating part of the mast out with a punch, (it's 2 pieces) and put carbon paste on it so it doesn't seize in place. I'm thinking the shop should have done that when they put it together.

Got lucky and 4/6 today.

Also got lucky and had a fun, chilly ride. Saw frost at the start. Currently KOM but nowhere near the podium.

I got guilted into working a few hours this afternoon.

The stock offset is something like 20-25mm. You have to buy the zero setback, but some shops might do a swap for you. The clamp/level adjustment can be tricky, but if you're semi-competent and once you've done it a couple times, it's fine.

I heard the local football team is doing ok so far. I don't follow them closely, but have to be aware so I can chitchat with "normal" people.

When I first rode with her I could see she was too stretched out and she mentioned her shoulders were hurting. I don't think she paid for a fitting but they should have been aware that her position was wrong. Plus the fact that they left it loose enough to slip and point the saddle up.

When she had the problem it was the first time I had even looked at one of those masts. Two of us fought the thing for some time and couldn't get it to move. I even took the mast off the bike and tried to force the tilt thing to move but I was afraid to break it. Fortunately the way it was stuck allowed it to be nearly level with the offset facing forward. I think she was actually comfortable with it and that's what convinced her to get the zero offset mast.

Next time someone has an issue with one of these masts I will be aware of how they're supposed to work, at least.
