Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It was my winter ride all last year. Handled the bad weather quite well.

has anybody changed out to a 25c tire and rim set up from the stock ?
Im planning to try it out and just wanted some feedback from anybody who's actually gone and done it rather than from reading about it.
tnx in advance.

I run 25C tires on my BMC SLR01 TeamMachine. I have experimented with tire pressures and have found that at 70 pound it is like riding a magic carpet. Most of our roads in this area are chipseal which can rattle your teeth. At low tire pressure and with 25s the bike is fast and smooth and comfortable. I weigh 135, so you'll have to experiment with tire pressures depending on your weight to insure that you don't get pinch flats, but you should be able to drop the pressure well below whatever you are currently running. I love the bigger tires, much, much better and faster than the 23Cs I rode for many years. Most wheels that can take a 23 can also take a 25. I actually thought about a 28C but my Reynolds Assault rims won't go that large.

thank you lastostrogoth.
my '05 Onix has the stock 23c and i was wondering since it looks like the clearance can handle a 25c to try to change the tire up to 25c.
read a lot of good stuff about the 25c thats the reason why i wanted to experiment.
regards mates

Wow, could not find an Orbea thread when I looked last.

Here is my Orbea Avant M40

I absolutely love this bike.

I think I am going to get some better wheels at the end of Dec. though, the ones it came with are slugs.

Orbea is an interesting company as well, part of the Mondragon Worker's Cooperative:

I never knew this thread existed as well. When I read "resurrected from the dead", I then understood why. I still have an old 2003 Orbea Orca (first carbon frame from them). I don't have a pic on it, but its close to the one below. Only difference are the components and my seat is at a reasonable height. I have the same orange and black frameset (57cm), Shimano Ultegra 6500 9-seed group, Ritchie alum bar and stem, Velocity A23 wheelset with Shimano Ultegra hubs, look pedals and Terry Butterfly saddle.

I'm hankering to build up on older Lemond Zurich 853 frameset. Unfortunately, that may mean stripping this bike to re-use the parts on the Lemond. I haven't started yet so will see...

What wheels did you get? How did it change the ride?

I had a custom set built. They are DT Swiss 350 hubs, with DT swiss spokes and Velocity A23 hoops. They are not the lightest wheels you can get, but they are certainly lighter than the stock wheels. The bike is much more peppy, climbing is easier. And they roll very nicely. I would say they are not a game changing upgrade, but they certainly do make the bike feel better.

5 year thread dredge? LET'S DO IT.

Recently acquired a 60cm Onix frameset circa 2006 (looking at catalogs available). Aluminum steerer keeps this tallest-they-offered frame size (for the Onix line) from being as light as it could be, but then so do the RS81 wheels (and not the full-meal-deal WH-9000 C24s). Still, I'm here because this is not a C&V bike, it's an Orbea for the Orbea thread, and it's a 60cm, so for all of us tall people (I'm 6'5"), this is what you can generally expect the bike to proportion out to be. Looks good!

Specs are full Dura-Ace 9000, Shimano RS81 C24 wheels, GP5000 28mm tires with Vittoria latex tubes, Fizik Aliante R5 saddle, Bontrager carbon seatpost, Oval carbon handlebars, S-Works stem, Ultegra pedals (6800), and Specialized Ribcage bottle cages.

I don't entirely trust the bathroom scale I used, so I'll need to come back with an official weight when I can employ my usual scale. It says 17 lbs or just under as pictured. My math--as I transferred parts from a different bike (a steel Paramount)--says it should be about 17.5 lbs. It feels light, but not that light. It's a fun bike. I'm well down on any sort of "base" for road miles (no trainer, so that's a zero), so my riding impressions are at my present power level. They built this to be strong and...to not be an Orca or Opal (aka less expensive), and it does well. Good steering, good ride quality. 28mm tires (actual width) maximum. Responsive out of the saddle, and would be even more fun if I was able to throw a few more watts at it. Looking forward to better weather and more rides with it.

Very nice! and in team Euskadi colors!
Orbea bikes tend to be a bit heavier than the competition, but they do not ride like it. Since my last post in this topic lol 5 years ago! I have added a 2022 Orca M20Team to the group. I went the MyO route and picked the colors etc. Was a fun experience. It (if the bathroom scale is to be believed) sits at 17 lbs. I replaced the wheels right off the bat with a set of alloy Hunt Aero 34's. VERY fun ride. I kept my 2017 Avant, and ride it when the weather might be questionable. Still a very comfortable and fun ride.
