RS Recon Gold 29er Fork?
Is this a decent fork for someone looking to get back into mountain biking after a long hiatus?
I've still got my old rigid 29er, wanting to throw a squishy fork on it and give mountain biking a try again after about 8 years off the bike.
I'm about 225lbs if that matters. $400 max budget for a fork. Anything else I should consider?

I've had the XC 30 and now the Recon, YES they are very good forks for the money.
I don't ride at the level where a $450 and up fork would be needed.
The thing with Rockshox Is unlike some other big name brands Is that In these lower to mid level models you can actually feel a difference when you make small adjustments to rebound damping and air pressure.

Those other fork brands.. I never see them out on the trails. I have no first hand reviews..
All day long. Fox and Rockshox and Raidon/Suntour
Are what everybody rides as far as I can tell....

You'd probably get some more input if you asked on here.
Don't know about stiffness but you should be able to find plenty of good reviews on Manitou's ABS+ compression damper.

You see Fox, Rockshox, and Suntour because those are the big OEM guys. Manitou and Mazzocchi also make good stuff and bad stuff just like the other guys but don't see much OEM usage here in the US. Yep head over the mtbr.

Anyways, I appreciate the input. I took the rigid bike out today... and realized I forgot how much fun mountain biking is. Probably just going to buy a completely new bike at this point.

Smart,, The Model I just got came with a dropper post, Far better tires and the Recon as upgrades for no extra cost over last years.
Prices are down some I see at all of my LBS,,,
Remember, Specialized forced their dealers to take large numbers of last years models,,you should see the numbers on the many yellow tagged bikes..
X bike:
Was $ 6400, Now $ 4400
Was $5300, Now $3900
Was $3800, Now $2800,,Over and over.
I did notice that Hard Tails In the $2000 range getting marked down to the $1400 range were pretty much all gone as were the $ 1000 bikes marked down to the $800 range.
So If U like Specialized get after It soon.....
Trek and Giant seem to be down 10-15% or so,, same with Salsa as far as I can tell.
Seen two Horse Thief's marked down about %30 because they were last years models,, still brand now bikes

Looking at an Airborne Seeker or Goblin. Went to Performance tonight to peruse they're 29ers and the guy literally didn't know what 29er meant, so that was a disappointment.

What's the current bike and what's the specs?
Would a new $400 fork make your current bike better then those $1000 to $1200 bikes that you're looking at?

After scrounging a bunch of local bike stores, Performance, REI, etc today I pulled the trigger on a BikesDirect Moto Fantom 29 Elite. I think it'll be a good bike to get me back into mountain biking.
