Does this setup require an Ergopower shifter that is different than normal for the FD? I've been on the lookout for a compact double or a triple and this looks like the solution - if it can be used with a first-gen 8-speed Ergopower setup.

Not that I know of, at least that is not how it was previously setup and it worked well. AFAIK since the front campy shifters have enough clicks that they essentially work as friction on the front, you don't need a special shifter as opposed to the Shimano setups

I'm using one of these same vintage with 46/30 rings, 8s chain, 8s Ergos, 8s 90s Athena FD and works great.

Thank you for the additional info. I'm not too well-versed on stuff other than Campy Nuovo and Super Record, so I will always defer to the experts on the 90s and beyond. Never too old to learn new things

I note the chainring tooth stampings are different than I'm used to: the 52 is marked 52-42, the 42 is 42-30 - wonder if these markings designate which rings to pair with each one? I'm assuming this is designed to work with the supplied rings in the specific combination (though I'm thinking of swapping the 53t ring I already have on my current setup onto this triple - for the downhills).

Exactly right - those indicate how the ramps and pins are designed for the smoothest up shifting from a lower ring. Aftermarket rings generally seem to come ramped/pinned without specified gaps/matches, and also come in flat. I’ve used both kinds with no problems on 8s/9s setups but YMMV etc etc. My Campy 7s era cranks and OEM flat rings worked just fine with my 8s Ergos before I swapped to the 46/30. Guessing with the looser tolerances on 8s you’ll be ok on most any arrangement.

I did some further investigation this evening and found that there's confirmation in Campagnolo literature that Ergo shifters will handle a triple. From my hardcopy of 1994 Campagnololo Component Installation Guidelines/General 8-speed System Notes: "As the Ergopower will shift across a triple crank (every Ergopower ever made will do this), you may use Ergopower...depending on your ...preference." However, I will need to pick up another FD to handle the low end.

Crankset is available again; I've had to pass on this item due to an unforeseen issue with the BB discovered by the seller.

Brewsmith Drillium Dude I am interested despite bb issues. I have the BB needed for an Italian BB shell, which is what I need.
Don't know where the set is!

Just in case anyone is thinking along these lines, I picked up a (British thread) Token ISO 111mm cartridge BB off eBay for my Camp racing triple (actually have 2, one for a Chorus triple). Works, but seems to bump out the chain line a bit more than it should. I’ll try to measure when I get a chance. It’s not so bad I’m in a rush to replace it, but failed the sniff test a little bit.

Regardless, it seems like $65 is a steal. I was hoping this would be worth more as i have a couple of these!
