Head tube part removal
Anyone know how to best remove the parts from the head tube shown in the photo? They are rusty. I would like to take them off for cleaning but not sure if they are just push in, threaded, or how they are attached. The bike is a 1986 Peugeot Corbier.

Those are the cups of the headset. There many types of headsets out there, but almost all of them are pressed in. Actually, all of them are.

Every mechanic has a "crummy screwdriver" they reserve for when they don't have the proper tool for a job.
Tap the cups repeatedly from opposite sides and they'll come out.

I'd suggest you clean them in place. Especially if they are rusty, they will take a good bit of force to remove. You will also need to buy or construct a tool to replace them when you are finished (if you haven't damaged them or the frame during removal).

Do not bother taking the cups out.

Just to get back with my results. I tried both the screw driver and copper pipe method. The copper pipe method worked the best in this case. There was considerable rust on the outside but Peugeot painted the inside of the head tube so it only took one whack with the copper pipe to free the races so they could be removed by hand.
The parts were cleaned in oxalic acid, neutralized in baking soda, and tapped back into place with a plastic mallet. Thanks to everyone for the advice both pro and con. I might have cleaned things in place if it were not for the fact I could look into the head tube and see it was painted inside and out.
