Claris 1x?

Is it possible to convert new shimano Claris to 1x? What's all needed?

All that is needed to convert any bike from a 2/3x is removing the front derailleur and changing the chainrings on the crankset to a single narrow/wide style chainring.

Maybe install a chain catcher. Other than the likely need to resize the chain, there's really not much to it.

The biggest decision you'll have to make is what front chainring size you want to run. 42T is a popular choice, but it depends on what sort of terrain you're riding and what range of cogs you have in the back.

And wheel/tire size! You will probably want a bigger ring with 26'' hoops compared to a 29'er. Not necessarily a lot bigger though.

Is there even a 40t+ cassette available for 8-speed? You can go up to 36t easily enough with a Shimano 8- or 9-speed mountain derailleur, and it'll work with Claris shifters. I'd recommend something with a clutch ("shadow derailleur") for extra chain-drop protection. The Claris derailleur is rated for up to 32t so it'll probably handle 34t no problem.

On the topic of narrow-wide chainrings, do they work with 8-speed chains? I remember at least one manufacturer (Wolf Tooth?) recommends a 10-speed chain even when running a 9-speed cassette.

Yep, good point, you'd need a ten speed chain, or run an 8 speed chain and use a chain retention device.

The biggest 8-speed cassette I remember seeing is Shimano Megarange 11-34. Claris are rated for a 32 bottom which means they could probably eke out a 34 but no one should tell you it will definitely work.

Not sure you need the NW ring or the chain catcher on a road bike.

I feel like replacing the RD and the ring and the cassette and the chain and the tires and maybe adding a catcher is going to cost a lot in comparison to the Claris-level bike itself.

Given the forum this is posted in, I'm assuming the bike won't just be run on pavement.

I guess. But it's not getting slap like an enduro MTB either.

Yea, it seems more complicated, and it would cost more money. I think it's a no go. Thanks for help.

Sorry for reviving this, I have Claris dropbike shifters and was interested if I need to do anything else if I don't want bigger cassete at the back and just want to convert my bike to 1x. So just front chainrings and chain adjustment?

You could just never shift the front and its effectively a 1x.
But yeah, if you want a more 'real' 1x then you could buy a new crank and 1x ring then slap that on and shorten the chain.
You will still have the left shifter with paddles that do nothing. There is no Claris 1x left brake lever to use so it looks cleaner.
