Bottecchia Professional SLX Restoration
I used this forum for information on purchasing a used Bottecchia Professional, believe is is 1990 model. Wanted to return something interesting to the forum. The bike is 55cm and the chrome is in beautiful shape. The top tube had a few fingernail sized paint chips that went all the way through the white prime to the metal. I tried several kinds of nail polish (white followed by thin coats of red) and then color sanding in stages followed by wax polishing then sanding/waxing again until the finish was completely mirror - however - the finish while smooth, had dark light patches that didn't look correct. At that point there was 2 directions the restoration was going to go: A) sand with 600-1000 grit and spot prime (white nail polish) and then sand the nail polish spots.....repeat until really really smooth and then paint with red lacquer from a can purchased at Lowes (don't laugh - ok laugh a little); B) send to professional bike restoration shop.
I opted for "A" and wanted to share the results of the by hand by can painting so that others might also be able to take this approach. The process was light coats of paint, done with frame top tube hanging vertical and all taped off extremely well. Then let dry and "wet" sand with 2000 grit paper/polish with clean cloth and turtle wax until shiny. This sand/polish process will take 4-5 hrs to do properly but results are very nice. Pics attached.

It looks really nice to me. Personally, the brake/ shifter location would not work for me. I would highly recommend moving them up until the bottom edge of the brake levers were slightly higher than the plane of the bottom of the handlebars.

Nice job! It looks familiar. I have its older brother, a 1987 Red & White SLX Bottecchia with C-Record.

I am pretty partial to red-and-white (both red-with-white and white-with-red) myself.
Great thread -- thanks for posting.

LEvers
Yes, I used cables from an existing bike for the first ride and the levers were too low. I've since moved just about aligned with your comments. thx

in recent days, I’ve been trying to define the red on my own with a detailed 1820+ color Pantone scale. I didn't find exactly.
There is a site here where, based on photos, it can be CMYK, RGB etc.codes take down. But you can also change the colors of a given code.
https://coolors.co/0c3e5e-155b87-508...-74e8d4-97f4e5
Then here I will try to modify the nearest Pantone pattern to the reality. It's already dark here us, please be patient for 1 day. But I take no responsibility for the result. The system does not seem completely perfect. For example, the proposed RAL replacement color has a good distance from the original CMYK color.
The other problem is that we’re talking about 30-year-old paint, I suspect it wasn’t that tone in his new age. If you want to conjure the original new condition, Bottecchia has been making a revived version of the legendary SLX for a couple of years. You may be able to get the fresh code from the manufacturer.

Looks like somewhere between Ventura and Santa Barbara... Beautiful bike btw!
The Bottecchia, circa 1989-1990 is a gorgeous bike. Attachment 503417

This Rustoleum Chinese red 243826 probably corresponds to Traffic red, which is RAL 3020. This is absolute red. 50% magenta, 50% yellow, 0% cyan. The red currently on the Bottecchia website is similar to the RAL 3028. But it’s conceivable that they changed the mixing recipe over the past 30 years and evaluate the 3028 as a slightly fresher, more modern color. It’s a hard thing, it takes damn luck to get the ready-mixed tone point to be the same as the color of your bike or any other bike. If one were to start modifying oneself, let’s say a Traffic red might reach the end result faster. **** thing.
