I am getting closer to final paint detail, then assembly of my late sixties Torpado. I need a set, or two, of 9mm cotter pins with nuts. Ebay does offer but thought to try here first. Fingers crossed.

Maybe none of my business, but I am curious since you posted about it a while back. Wasn't it a stem that you tried shipping him? Did it ever surface?

I aired it here, it's public business. It finally arrived 4mos later, after circling the globe by way of China, then landing with a small chunk of duties due. But it's arrived, and this may be the same bike receiving it.

I've got dozens upon dozens of cotters or all sizes, both old stock and some newer stuff. I never mind sharing with fellow BF'ers, but I'm a little gunshy on the shipping here ...

9mm cotter pins with nuts are easy enough to find. Amazon has them for 4$ USA. But understand that getting a proper fit on a cotter pin requires you to do a final manipulation. Not all "9mm cotter pins with nuts" are the same type and size. I take my new pins and go through a detailed tuning per say with micrometer checking angels, tapper and length. Its not hard. Put them in a bench vice and tune them with a file. Don't be surprised when you find out they usually are different for each side of your crank.

In the early 70's the Liotto bike shop, in Vicenza Italy, had one old guy who did this. I saw him using file and stone to shape the pins. He also stamped them with a "D" and "S" (right and left). It's a nice memory. A wooden floored, greasy, bike shop filled with bike parts stacked floor to ceiling and eight Italians of varying age bantering of bike builds and repair...

Luckily on my 1964 Frejus I recently did, I got them out and back in without damage. This thread does give me hope for replacements if needed in case I have trouble when I do it again in perhaps 5 years. Seldom used bike.

After a few months and circumnavigating the planet, this lovely and rare stem showed up in my PO box. It took a while and the guys who went in together to send me the stem, I am forever in your debt. Anyway, all these items showed up on the same day, a couple of weeks ago...


After your kindness, generosity, perseverance and patience, I would never ask that you put yourself through that again. I should add that the pins are not for the Rabeneick, the bike the stem is destined for. That crank is already mounted and good to go...


Nope, the pins are for an entry level Torpado from the sixties...

If they are, either the pins are not the same, or either the axle or the crankarm is worn/badly made at the axle-crankarm joint.

I’m glad it arrived. it was a sad story that you tried to do something to help another BF member, but it went awry by no fault of your own.

I get it, but also feel bad, I've got more than enough to help as you see, I have no shortage of compatible cotters and most of these are 9.0mm. It's too bad you can't do int'l SASE.

Maybe we have someone else local to ATL willing to try their luck with shipping things up there? But I suspect the cost may make it just as expensive to buy online.

I'm open to whatever though. What's mine is yours, as long as I have enough to work on future cottered bikes. I try to make sure I have enough on hand to answer if the co-op calls.

@ francophile - and that is true from me to you, also. That said...

I managed to find a set of cotters and thanks to all those who were willing to help. Actually, I feel a bit foolish since the cotters, cost and shipping is minimal. Sorry to have wasted the time of fellow forum members.
