Shifter compatibility
I am upgrading a 80's seven speed road bike to a nine speed. I am looking at buying brake shifters meant for an eleven speed, are these two components compatible?
My thinking is they will be but I just wanted to see if I could get some reassurance before I made the big purchase.

Nio, 11-speed shifters are by no means compatible with a 9-speed derailleur or cassette. Why would you think they are? Also, a 7-speed rear wheel is not compatible with a 9-speed cassette and an 8/9/10-speed wheel is not compatible with an 11-speed cassette.

Okay, thanks. I figured that that extra couple gears on the shifters would just not be used. I upgraded the wheels as well and they have a 9 speed cassette.

It's more than just a couple of extra clicks. The cable pull and derailleur geometry are different between 9-speed and 11-speed and, again, your 9-speed wheels are not 11-speed compatible.

I have a near new pair of Shimano trigger (brake/shifter combo) for trade, if you are interested. (Flat bar, v brakes)

What rear derailleur do you have? Also what hub/cassette are you using?
FYI, brands have different requirements for index shifting and not always compatible. Index shifting came about in mid-80s, some older RD didn't take this into consideration.
This info will help us to make recommendations.

I purchased a nine speed 105 group-set (cassette, rd, fd) that came off a salsa jake the snake.

I just wanted to check whether or not one could mix and match rd and brake shifters.
I've since learned this can not be so.

@jgarcia202 - It is complicated. The key elements to align are the spacing between sprockets on the rear hub, RD pull ratio and shifter pull ratio. Very easy to experience incompatibility, even within a manufacturer offerings over time.
It can be done. I have Campagnolo drive train using a modified spacing on a Dura Ace cassette. I knew the RD and Ergo's were compatible but the spacing of the sprockets did not match the movement of the RD.

The Sora line was made in 9 speed more recent and should also be compatible.
Not quite sure what is currently produced in 9 speed and if they are different. If you plan on using some of the latest models post a question here and someone will probably know if there are any issues. A new thread with the model # will probably get the best responses.
To make index shifting work well, the chain needs to be compatible and the rear dropout hanger must be properly aligned.
