Question about a 1983 Univega Super Strada
Someone on here mentioned a while back that the Mavic wheels on the bike weren't original and
the bike came with Araya wheels. Everything else on the bike is original, even the seat. So
I'm wondering if the Mavic wheels are original. I know the 1984 catalog shows Araya wheels
but this is a 1983 model and I can find no catalog or specs for the 83 model. Anyone know
about the 1983 model?

Your bike originally came with tubular rims, I'm assuming that the Mavic rims are clinchers. A previous owner probably swapped out the rims so they didn't have to deal with gluing on tires.

My '82 Competizione (which is pretty close with the Super Strada in their lineup of the era) has Araya clinchers laced to Sunshine Pro-Am hubs, and these are original. It's not confirmatory one way or another, but it suggests Araya clinchers made it far up the line at least a year prior.

In that era, Univega bikes came with only Japanese-made parts, and Mavic rims were made in France, so they can't be original.

Aha, that was an exception I forgot about, so I shouldn't have made such a broad blanket statement. But I'm pretty sure the Super Strada didn't come with Mavic rims.

The 1980 catalog shows the Superstrada with a Columbus frame and (I believe) Italian parts. The '89 catalog has several models with Weinmann rims. Selle Italia saddles were common. I would assume you're right about the Mavic rims.

Death fork? Naaaah!!
The '83/'84 Super Strada that passed through my hands had a late 80's Campy wheelset. The catalogue data is out there, but I'm too lazy to search it out and cross reference it for you.
