1982 Miyata 1000 with issue
I rescued this Miyata 1000 from my local co-op yesterday where it has been sitting for over 3 years. It seemed too nice to sit there, but was not my size though. A local swap meet is next week here in NW Ohio, so I thought of finding a good home for it. Unfortunately upon cleanup I discovered the non stock pedal JB epoxied in on the drive side and a right handed threaded pedal screwed in on the non drive side. That probably relegates the pretty crank to junk status and is perhaps why this bike was donated. I may visit my LBS to see if they have the expensive taps and inserts and do a job like that.
Frame number and components say 1981, but catalog pics show this color and graphics as 1982. I believe it looks all original except the tires and missing stock pedals. Nice components with little use on this one. It catalogs as a 25" to top of seat tube which hurts resale too. Actual measurements are about 62cm seat tube and 58cm top tube and 34" standover. I only just cleaned it up a bit and pulled the BB and steering head which were fine. The front Sansin Gyromaster hub spins forever while the rear needs lube and adjusted. I just couldn't watch this one get beat up in the rack at the co-op, which is where most of the scratches came from I would bet. A good polish would pretty things up on this one. Thoughts??
Edit; That isn't a dent in the top tube near the head in the 3rd picture. It is actually a slight run in the factory paint which I found a bit surprising for Miyata.
1982 Miyata with both racks even
I might keep this front rack

Beautiful bike. The later miyatas go for real money. I reckon it’s worth 500 once you figure out the crank. The later miyatas are worth more which has pushed up prices but the size hurts the value. I may be interested in buying the rings as a set as I like 86 bcd cranks

When I read the title, thought it was going to be a frame issue. Just a crank issue? No problem, that can be dealt with fairly easily, plenty on the used market to choose from.
25" frame hurting resale? Maybe on a lesser frame, but not on a 1000. There's a reason this is one of the holy grail touring bikes (Trek 720 / Spesh Expedition etc). I'd snap a tall one up for a reasonable price all day, every day and twice on Sundays.
Value? Replace the crank with something serviceable and refurb as necessary. $500-700 locally to start, more if you're willing to ship.

No go on the crank repair at the LBS. I see the taps and inserts online, but $160 at least. Wonder if that could be done at a larger bike show by someone? I just love cranks with flutes, and the rings on this have seen very little use. I’ll probably walk this bike around at the next show with the disclaimer about the cranks. A nice conversation piece. The big Ann Arbor show sounds like it is cancelled. I have never been there but have really wanted to go there.

It’s a pretty crank and not unobtanium. I bought one at a reasonable price off eBay for my Fuji Finest.

Here's one but too expensive:

Search for an SR crank. A lot of sellers don't know much about what they're selling. Also why worry if you're selling? I'd just find a 110/74 bcd crank if you want to maximize your return.

I just thought having the generic 110 might not add too much value to a collector vs the bad stock 86bcd with good rings. If I was buying, I would look at that as a challenge but the look of the stock fluted one would be an inspiration. Perhaps a vintage buyer might even have access to someone with the proper kit to do the inserts too.
I saw a Stronglight 99 for 35 lbs English plus 11 shipping with no rings. Seems to be maybe $65. Perhaps I will ask $425 as is at the swap meet. I didn’t pay much for this bike. I may also decrease the value a bit and take the front rack for my 89 1000LT to match the stock rear. It seems these front racks are pretty rare.

Replacing the cranks with a nice 110bcd triple instead of leaving the bad cranks will increase the value and make it easier to sell. This is a rider not a collectors item. Very few if any buyers will be hung up on originality. Removing the racks will have will have little or no affect on resale value.

This is close to my size and I would buy one like it if I found one but my spend would not be very close to your ask.
Again, I'll send you a crank.

My experience of swap meets is that buyers (including me) are expecting 50% off eBay prices. On eBay, that’s a quick $500 BIN. At a swap, $250 if you want to be sure to move it on.

Thanks to folks for the advice and offers too. Off to the co-op Monday to see if anything is available to get this into riding condition by next weekend, but slim pickings there. Yes to that collector/enthusiast comment too. Now if the stock crank was just fine, one might hold out for a buyer looking for a stocker. Replacing the original crankset would make me feel a little less guilty about taking off the front rack and even perhaps the rear one too and selling this bike as a high quality rider locally. I will have to see what comes up this week.

You should take merziac up on his very generous offer.

You seldom see that much agreement on BF. The 110/74 crank is a better solution since this bike is a rider and chainrings are available. Plus you can sell the 86 bcd rings (or keep them). Agree also that the ask is likely too high at the swap.

Supportive community here
That sounds like the way to go, and I have contacted a couple members with their kind offers here. It seems I just won’t be in a rush to fix this before the show, and can repay the kindness by offering this one up here first to some BF member local to my area for a good price. I did that with a too small miyata 610 previously. Since this bike will just be a rider, I did take off the front rack and the highly regarded Avocet touring saddle. Any way it works out, it is a pleasure putting a wrench to a vintage Miyata, and it was killing me watching it get beat up and neglected at the co-op.
