10/11 speed compatibility question
Hi,
I have a 10 speed Shimano DA drive train on a bike and need to replace the rear derailleur. Will an 11 speed RD (looking at Shimano 5800) work with no other changes? [Since I have a different 11 speed bike, I will possibly upgrade this one to 11 speed in the future so the wheels are compatible. That's the reason to not just purchase another 10 speed RD.]
More specific questions: Will the 10 speed chain run through the 11 speed RD without a problem? Will the 10 speed shifters work fine with the 11 speed RD (and of course 10 speed cassette).
Thanks for the help!

The 11 speed rd will not work with your 10 speed shifters.

It will not work correctly, 11 speed rear derailers are incompatible with 10 speed and older shifters. The ratio that the rear derailer moves, versus the amount of cable pulled by the shifter, is different than 10 speed.

You will have to buy a 10 speed compatible derailleur to work with your 10 speed drivetrain. One thing to keep in mind if you are planning on a later upgrade to 11 speed is that your cassette body may not accept an 11 speed cassette. Depending on the wheels you have, it may not even be possible to change to an 11 speed compatible cassette body
