Just a quick location update: I'm now in Portland.

Enjoying the vibe of the city and inhabitants. My luck ran out Tuesday when I had an accident with my front wheel trapped in tram track on a street. Bike is OK, only I was bruised up.
Meeting Forumite Velocivixen at Velo Cult tomorrow to take in the sights of the shop and share some coffee and conversation.
Will be here until Sat/Sun. And will make a day trip to Multnomah Falls, OR before departing for Astoria.

more later!

Dream Cycle is my closest bike shop since moving to the new place - had them press in the CK headset cups on the Holland.

Darren & co. do great work and are attentive and resourceful (even if I did stump 'em looking for a 28.4mm seat post shim).

Sharon's Soma looks like a very nice bike (as are some of the choice Salsas and Cielos in the shop right now).

Andrée-Anne and I drove from Portland to Astoria last year (destination: Seaview, WA, on the other side of that epic bridge - nice riding in the park on that side); I can only imagine that it will be a beautiful ride out to the mouth of the Columbia.

EDIT: Oh man, I was skimming when I first posted this reply - and somehow missed the part about your accident! Hope that bruising isn't too bad.

Yeah, it's a great Olmo. Note the matching Silca pump. And I love the angular lines of Campy's Victory (or is it Triomphe?). It's a real cream-of-the-crop collection.

Looking forward to seeing Portland. I hear it's a great cycling city.

WNG, thanks for the updates. You've been taking some fantastic photos. Why do I feel that you've lived more in the past couple weeks than I have in ages?

Sorry to hear about the mishap with the train tracks. Glad it wasn't worse. Enjoy Portland!

Crash? That sux But I'm glad you're okay (and of course that the bike is okay, too). I'll never forget my one-and-only confrontation with tram tracks and a front wheel. Same result, only the location was different (Portugal). Surprised that those fat tires would even go into the gap

Looking forward to pics and reports - btw, are you still heading off for the falls?

Wishing you best of luck and no more accidents for the remainder of your trip, my friend. And I'll be visiting in Phoenix come late December and into late February.

Victoria Day 2 continued:

Another cruise...uhh more like star ship made port into Victoria today. The Hamilton registered to Bermuda. It's so massive, I wonder if pictures can do justice to represent its size.

@mikemowbz @holden west @Drillium Dude

I'm fine guys, just skinned a knee. The bike only suffered torn bar tape and the rear rack sacrificed its finish for the bike. All else were sidewalk repairs.

Jeff, yes still shooting to ride to the Falls. I will make it a day trip while here, 61 miles with 4500 ft of climbing, 3000 ft just reaching the Falls. Shooting for Friday.

Unfortunately, it's raining today. May it stop before setting off for Velo Cult!

Rob, that's some funny trivia about the Gracepoint signage! I would've never known that, since I don't really watch any TV.

@photogravity Thanks Dallas! May you have a safe journey with your JT.

Hey, WNG - I've been away from the forum for several weeks, so I'm just seeing this. Congrats on pursuing this great ride (and glad to hear you weren't seriously injured). When you get down toward San Diego PM me if you like, and I'll see if I can meet up and ride a while with you.

Victoria, BC Day 2: continued...

As I headed towards the Inner Harbour, the BC Parliament Buildings and the old Empress Hotel came into view. The harbor was full of activity with seaplanes diving in for a landing, and ships and boats and water taxis crossing paths.

The Empress.

I knew what I wanted, and headed into Chinatown in search of a Vietnamese restaurant I passed last night. I was craving Pho. A noodle soup with a broth, if done to perfection, is so tasty and addicting, one can't get enough of it once experienced. As Anthony Bourdain once put it, it's like crack to a junkie! :-9\

I found the place and the folks allowed me to put my fully-loaded bike inside to my relief. I enjoyed a large bowl of Beef Pho which warmed me from the inside. Hadn't enjoyed such a good example since Boston!

Still had time to kill, so I worked my way back to enjoy the setting Sun.

Just a quick status update:

I left Portland Sunday for the coast and made it half way by nightfall, hampered by high temps and a strong headwind. I stayed with a host in the region, and departed the next day.

But not before I checked to see why his Colnago Master wasn't shifting properly. Fixed it and corrected a loose headset, among other things.

IMG_9285c by WNG555, on Flickr

I safely arrived in Astoria, OR 7pm PST, and headed south to Seaside, OR to get to my next warmshowers host, Neil. Cold and dark, but made it at 9pm.

The Astoria-Megler Bridge, the longest 3-span through truss bridge in the world.

It's raining today, so it's a rest day and should get caught up here.

Just letting you folks know I'm still alive and kicking. Although a number of RVers pulling trailers did their best to run me off the road.

I've had a pretty busy and hectic first week down the Oregon coast, including getting caught in torrential rain storms for two days. My bags were soaked, including my camera bag. Although I bagged my electronics, they looked like they took a steam bath. Bike was a mess too. Headlight stopped working due to a shorted battery pack. Diligent drying appeared to have saved them.
It was pretty miserable, although the views were spectacular.

Been experiencing some very steep climbs daily, and getting to my destinations after sundown.
I'm 3/4 of the way down Oregon, and decided to give myself a rest (legs are very sore) and the bike some needed maintenance (drivetrain is filthy and noisy, I will need a new chain soon). I pulled into Bandon, OR and found a host here. But they are off the grid where they live and don't have high speed cable or dsl. Posting with the use of their mobile service and don't wish to use up their bandwidth.

I should cross into California this weekend, and will have some more opportunity to get online.

The tradition continues! My Bandon host is suffering from a repetitive usage hip injury, but wishes to ride.
She owns a Cannondale road bike back East and she rides fine and feels fine on a road bike, but the hybrid she has here, isn't working. So, while working on my own bike, I flipped her stem to lower the stance and gave the bike more of a French-fit set up. And fitted her properly to the bike.

On the C&V side....her husband rescued a vintage Trek 620 touring bike from the local dump! It's nearly stock too, with blackburn racks. Can't believe someone tossed it out. It's sweet...even my size!

My wife and I loved Bandon when we stayed there a few years ago.

Good luck with the rains and I hope everything dries out.

Safe travels.

Lol, first thing WNG noticed on the Kona I loaned him for our ascent of Mt. Muller... "Hmmm, your headset is a just little loose here, lemme take a look at it."

I had to keep him away from the rest of my bikes so he wouldn't find out how half-assed a mechanic I really am.

Pro-Tip @WNG, next time you're getting rained out, hie thee to the nearest public library; most of them have high speed wi-fi and you can catch up on your uploading. I can't wait to see what Port Angeles looks like, I hear it's really nice.

South of Seaside that coast road is tough, even before you factor in the RVs and rain.
You've got some brass ones for making that trek solo & wet.

Whoa. Portland?

I think I missed something. What happened to pics from the Washington coast, Will????

I feel for ya. During our tour we sometimes…most days… spent 2 hours every morning in a laundromat, pumping quarters into the dryers. All of our gear got soaked on a regular basis. We chose sub-standard tents.

Don't forget pics of Cape Perpetua !

Just took in this whole thread-to-date, one of the best reads ever on this forum. Happy trails, WNG!
