Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Howdy all, thought I would stop in to say hello and to post a progress update. I've been doing pretty okay recently on my diet and exercise. I managed to ride a little over 5,300 miles last year and have a goal of 6,000 miles for 2021.

I'm currently down 85 pounds, from 295 to 210. I'm still just as ugly but that isn't nearly as easy to fix. My initial goal is to get to 195 then decide if I want to go lower.

Anyway, that's about it for me. Hope everyone is doing well.

One of the nice things about Intervals is that, when you're riding without a PM, it does a better job of estimating your effort than Strava and it's added to the load tally. That's brought me to the point where I like having power info, but I don't have a burning need for it on every ride. As long as I have a pretty decent estimate of my cumulative load, I'm cool with that.

What kind of pedals do you have in mind? SPD seems to be the 900lb gorilla when it comes to mud and dirt, unless you're one of those filthy flat pedal users.

Some of those take up a lot of GPU resources, don't they? Or are they more CPU-intensive? The closest I get is the occasional iso RPG, but they don't usually have as many moving parts onscreen.

I don’t think they’re as intensive as RTS. Maybe I’m wrong.

It really only works with a good solid indoor and outdoor database of rides with power and HR. Before I got a PM, the R value for the relationship between power and HR estimates of load on rides with both was in the .7-.8 range, based on fake miles: acceptable, but not great. Post-PM, it went to .97 or so and uses a different estimate of FTP depending on whether the workout is indoor or outdoor. With no power data, it's based solely on HR zones with no anchor to the physics and is, thus, meaningless.

Ah that's a good thing to hear. I've only got the one power meter but 5 bikes that all get ridden quite regularly. I do at least have a bluetooth HRM now, so I'm really interested in seeing that info after a mountain bike ride. Before now I just felt like I was going to die, now I can see how close I'm actually coming!

How do you win such a competition? Exactly what gets judged?

Had an awesome ride this morning. Temperature was a warm 38 degrees, barely any cars out. Didn’t pass any walkers on the cap trail and I managed to not crash. Only area of disappointment. Kate, my Australian lass head coach tells me my average speed every mile. Sometimes she hard to hear over the wind and what not (she lives in my back pocket) anywho, the last 10 miles or so I was sure she was saying average speed 19.5 mph. This made sense in my head because I felt awesome, so I pushed it even harder. When I finished I came to the realization that I am still just as slow as ever. Kate is no longer in my back pocket. Going with Elizabeth next.

The quality of the sound, the placement of every individual instrument, the accuracy, the stage height. Even the bass drums sound like they are coming from the front of your car's hood. It really is amazing at how accurate the sound can be. It should sound like you are at a live concert. You can even hear the singer walking across the stage. Often times you can hear the singer take a breath. You can hear the drum stick hit the cymbal, not just the sound from the cymbal.

Yes - a baseline with good PM data was the assumption.

Nope. Even if I had the interest/money, I suspect my hearing is not up to the task of appreciating the sound nuance.

I saw these pictures on the "I Love Road Cycling" group on FB. Had no idea they were from a BF member. Small world.
