Even with motor vehicles like dirt bikes & ATVs, they can't be registered for public street usage, but plenty of folks ride those on NYC streets illegally.
https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york...v2i-story.html
AFAIK, most people don't ride a bike (or ebike) for "pain" or "hurt", but because it is fun and get to places they want to be.

We have a TON of doo-doo heads out where I live on Long Island riding non-registered off road vehicles. There's a huge push to stop and confiscate the bikes & quads. Too many people are, literally, being terrorized and injured by these idiots riding on open roads, buzzing people on bikes or on foot, etc, etc.

Some bad news for Fiido X.
Only one single case reported, no explanation how it occurred; but Fiido seems to be doing the right thing.
I hope they figure out how the failure occurred and come up with a fix.

Lectric’s new budget folding ebike, it's too bad that it's a single speed.

Now THIS is how you do a recall!!!
"Electrek spoke with Fiido’s CTO Keven Wang this morning, who shared how the team has been working night and day on everything from the failure analysis to the recall plan.
As he explained:
After receiving the feedback on April 3rd, the entire Fiido team attached great importance to and quickly implemented the solution. The Fiido product laboratory immediately conducted more rigorous testing. After the failure reappeared on April 8th, we immediately announced that all users stopped using it, meanwhile, closing all Fiido X sales channels. Because we, like our users, put safety first.
Although the FIIDO X V1 version has passed the relevant tests of EN15194 on this product, we did not fully consider the correlation between the strength test and the transportation environment. This will also be one of the key improvements in our future work.
Although this recall will let FIIDO face an unprecedented financial crisis, responsibility and credibility are more important to us. Fortunately, our missteps haven’t caused anything more serious. Fiido hopes to regain everyone’s faith with our honesty and responsible attitude. The occurrence of this incident is an alert to us. We will hang the broken FIIDO X on the wall of the R&D department and let it remind us how to design products."

I don't want a 55 pound fat tire beast. I just bought this mouser, I'll likely change it a KT controller with PAS/throttke.

Fat tire, folding ebikes are not for everyone.
They do offer more stability and capabilities on loose surfaces, mud, sand, snow, etc.
I bought one for 80+ y-o FIL, back in 2017.
He used to ride it to his favorite fishing spot on the beach, few miles from his house before COVID.
Fat tires offer more stability at lower speed that he travels, even though it is heavy, he seems to able to manage it.
For now, his cycling days a few & far between, maybe a lighter ebike will get him out more.

Depends on the type of motor (look up direct drive and geared, weight of the bike and some possibly less important factors, and can range from barely noticeable to oppressive.

ebikes in general weight more than regular. acoustic bicycles.
If you run out of juice, you will still have to carry the battery with you.
Of course it is more work.

If you're interested in a specific system, we'll be happy to opine on what to expect from it as a pedaling platform. I, and others here have ridden many different ebikes and have some idea what to expect.

The main criteria to consider when choosing a folding electric bike
Portability is one of the most important distinguishing characteristics of folding electric bikes, and indeed any bicycle. If you regularly travel to work and have to use public transport every time, in most cases this feature becomes indispensable.
Almost any electric bike with this feature becomes compact, saving space and making it easy to take it with you anywhere.
The main criteria to consider when choosing a folding electric bike
In addition to the necessary folding function, these ebikes must meet the following criteria to be considered truly exceptional: Folding ebikes should be judged on the balance between range, motor power, folded size, price and features that complement their portability and enhance the riding experience.
Pay attention to the compactness of the folded electric bike. More often than not, these e-bikes have smaller wheels simply because manufacturers want to either reduce weight or make the e-bike less bulky. We are more inclined towards the latter.
This does not mean that all folding electric bikes are like that. For example, you can still find plenty of good folding ebikes with big wheels - just not as big as the ones on regular ebikes.
When researching potential models to buy, it's a good idea to already know what type of foldable ebike (mountain, city, commuter, mini, etc.) you need to buy before considering other criteria.
By the way, mini ebikes are just the ones that make the most of the space-saving features of folding ebikes. Again, the differences are obvious, you just need to be aware of them.

Electric scooters certainly have their market, but if someone is looking for something with pedals that propel the ebike; that behemoth may just be the answer.

- hitch on my car
- 50lb hitch rack (or more)
- storing a large and heavy hitch rack
- taking it on and off the car which requires a tool and again, it's 50lbs
Here's the amount of effort I need for a folding bike:
- fold it
- pick it up and put it in the trunk
- the bike is 50lbs as well but I don't have to attach it to a part on the car I just put it in the trunk
For others it's simple the novelty factor - it's new, it looks cool, they want to have it to saitate their novelty seeking.

That said, I think the Wallkes' 1680wh specs vs the 1488wh of my Gosen and it's 30+mph capability makes it King of the folding ebikes as far as range and top speed are concerned. I do plan to change the gearing and upgrade the frame battery for a 20ah in the very near future though, which will bring the Gosens' capacity to 38ah/1824wh and to me seems a lot easier than changing out a 750w motor and controller for a 1000w setup.
Thoughts?

Folks, I've been seeing more and more folding e-bikes on the road lately. I was wondering except for space and portability issues, what other benefits and features do these things have???I'm looking to buy one soon... What would you look for in a folding electric bike when shopping for one? [/QUOTE]
First thing is.....One of the factors of folding ebikes, especially those with batteries that have a combined amp hour spec of 20ah or more, is that they are HEAVY for a bicycle and can weigh over 90 lbs without added accessories. If you're willing to lift that much when loading it into a car or carrying it up some stairs, then it's ok. I'm a big guy at around 320 lbs and I have accepted this drawback when loading my bike into my car, but besides their being heavy, they're also bulky and a bit awkward to carry. I think that carrying it up more than just half a dozen steps would be dangerous, even for me.
That said, I love the portability of a folding ebike and with the 31amp hour/1488 watt hour battery bank of my Gosen Q7, I can go relatively long distances before recharging. Gosen dealers estimate 50-100 miles. I haven't tested that yet, but most dealers stretch the truth. We'll see.
For me, the most important specs were:
1. Price (<$2000)
2. Range (50-100 miles)
3. Portability (<100 lbs, folding)
4. Off-road capability (A fat 4" tire bike)
5. Torque for hill climbing (1000watt drive motor)
6. Top Speed (about 28mph)
7. Dual suspension (Hydraulic forks, rear absorber)
The other biggest issue, reliability, varies between models and there's really not enough data yet to be able to compare models in the <$2000 price range. However, it appears to me that more expensive models made by well known name brands are probably more reliable overall than my Chinese Gosen, which is built on a common folding frame used by a dozen other manufacturers of different names. The brushless geared hub motor is generic of Chinese origin as well.
I have heard that mid-drive designs that drive the pedal shaft, are more powerful than hub-drive designs that drive either the rear or front wheels (or both). I do believe that is probably the case, but it also puts an immense amount of strain on your drivetrain, ie; the sprockets, chain, derailleur, etc. so I think in the end the drivetrain would require a lot more attention to daily maintenance. I also think the difference in torque and power is probably relatively nominal and for me, the extra daily maintenance headache would not be worth such a small performance difference.
Besides that, Mid-drive designs are a lot less common in folding ebikes.
Some may feel that having to fold an ebike is inconvenient and prefer to use a bike with a conventional frame, but I hate bike racks and I love my cars' gas mileage and appearance so there you go.... it's really up to your preference.
Hope this helps.
