Just saying Hello...

Greetings to all over 50's! I'm Doug (55) from Central Pa. (Make that HILLY Central Pa.) Just getting back into the love of two wheels again after a much too long departure. I've been here "lurking" for a bit and have already enjoyed and learned much from your posts; thanks much! I've attached two photos, one from my now favorite loop and one of me... Looking forward to more inspiration and such.

Hi Doug,

My name is Jim, and I’m a cyclist (…Hi Jim...) Four decades of cycle touring, road cycling and year round cycle commuting
.

Welcome and keep up with it. Your post was particularly serendipitous, since just last weekend we held a Seventh Annual Fifty-Plus Forum Ride out of the Raystown Lake Resort; Altoona was the nearest town I recognized. I haven’t written my ride description yet to that thread, but will soon.

Compared to the hills of Metro Boston, I consider that I rode over two mountains, shorter perhaps, but with grades as challenging as I had encountered in Colorado (but that was 35 years ago).

...Hi Jim...
I noticed the 50+ Ride listing soon after I joined the forum. Looked like a great time, anticipating all acounts of the event. Maybe next year for the Eighth I'll be able to participate!

Thanks digibud; I spent three summers in Alaska but only as far north as Auke Bay on the panhandle. Nice Surly BTW. A LBS sells them and was checking them out just today.

I'd love to Bill. Unfortunately, I seemed to have been a bit over zealous in my riding and have pulled a new found muscle in my lower back. Either too much climbing out of the saddle or the feeling of being way too much younger when I'm in it! Bummer is, what used to be a couple of days to recoup now takes longer... Ah well, aside from my new claim to the "Ibuprophen poster child" and stretching, there's always these forums and GCN. Ride well my friend(s).

Welcome, Doug! Having just spent 4 days riding in your neck of the woods, I'd certainly agree that it is hilly up there, and also beautiful! I've never seen Fall colors that nice, even though I'd guess we were about a week ahead of the peak. Jim, Miss Kenton and I have now all posted our reports from the 50+ gathering at Lake Raystown, so check them out.

I'd love to ride up that way again, but I hope never to drive that much again.

I also enjoyed the colors, and in no way being contrarian, I thought they were muted this year (as in New England). Just my opinion as a lifelong leaf-watcher (but not peeper) in Michigan and New England. (A leaf-peeper drives, or rides out just to look at the leaves.) Do you get fall foliage down in Georgia, BluesDawg?

FYA, again not to be argumentative, but just my opinion, I wrote this response to the thread, “Does a near-perfect weather place exist?

Oh sure, we have fall foliage, and it can be pretty amazing, just not as much as farther north. The mountains of North Georgia are full of "leaf peepers" right now.
A friend told me this weekend that there were not many things she missed about living up north, but the fall colors was one of them.

The leaves are muted this year in my area due to the amount of rain fall, dilutes the sugar don't cha know...
