So, I'm still getting out and about. Just not finding the time to pull pictures from my GoPro.

"Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded." The Yogi Berra-ism has come true. The urban legend that the Minuteman is a pandemic death trap means that few are out walking or riding on the Minuteman. Of course, the weather is currently beautiful for many of us, we'll see what happens in May when the weather approaches 70 degrees.

(On the other hand, Somerville Community Path often is too crowded.)

Anyhow, I still go out on lonely rides, still inexplicably bring a ulock along .

Some recent shots:

March 28, I was an early adopter of riding with a mask, wearing a summer neck gaiter. There's are tradeoffs to make with riding with a mask. Other masks would be more effective UNTIL they get wet, but they rapidly get wet. This gets at most damp, plus on the bike there are so few close encounters of the less than six foot kind anyway. I'm waiting for curbside ravioli, so this was an "essential errand":

April 15, note the tactical urbanism touch of the Purell Stand in the middle of the Alchemist. This was an excersize run to MIT and back on Mass Ave:

This morning I hit the road before the sun came up with my Honey Allroads for 23 miles. It was cold, 32* to be specific. I wore my winter cycling boots and cold weather gloves. Later on in the afternoon I rode my Seven Redsky for 47 more miles, dressed for warmer weather. I was amazed that my friend Mr. Headwind was keeping up with me the whole entire ride.

I already took the studded tires off my Boone 7 cross bike. I am getting suited up in a moment to bang out a quick 20 miles on that bike without studded tires.

So I rode 21.1 miles in all. It was obviously raining and cold. There were inconsequential amounts of slush on the roadside. I didn’t encounter any ice so I can feel comfortable saying anyone else contemplating riding won’t need studded tires. The 34mm wide Bontrager CX0’s I have mounted ate up every mile. I wore my Goretex rain coat and Craft hardshell pants, Bontrager boots and Bar Mitts. The snow on the unpaved surfaces was a dreadful sight to behold. I’d have skipped riding today if I weren’t trying to burn off last nights beer and ice cream. That and I’m trying to hit 2000 miles before May 1st.

I'm reading about all of y'all's riding exploits and wishing I could ride too. My sweetie won't let me and truth be told, as high-risk person I'd be a bit cautious anyway.

Instead I ride in the living room watching Netflix. It works and keeps be sane.

He! Great idea. It would take up most of the living room! And I'd end up doing most of the work....

I finally got to ride outdoors today, and on a vintage French bike yet! I mounted my Peugeot UO8 on the trainer in the back yard and rode for an hour. Such lovely spring day.

It was a lovely day indeed. I headed out at 0900 with my Allroads. The roads were a little wet and I wasn’t ready to get my Seven dirty. I escaped from Waltham by South st and rte 30 into Weston before bombing down Church st and eventually onto good ol rte 117. After riding by the circle of rocking horses I got on 126 and predictably followed it to Concord Center. I rode up Monument st and on over by Ferns to see it sadly empty. Shortly afterwards I was aero tucked going down Strawberry Hill rd before bringing it back to 117 via Baker Bridge rd and eventually back on home for a great 41 mile ride.

Put on a mask and took the Rawland Nordavinden out for a 22-mile jaunt, out Mass. Ave. to Lexington Center, picking up Bedford Street to the Minuteman crossing, then down the Minuteman dodging breathers as far as Wiggins Ave., leaving the Minuteman there to follow Wiggins into a network of industrial park parking lots until I crossed the Shawsheen River via the Bridge Street Wormhole, then working my way over to the staged climb up Page Road and the fast descent down Grove Street, proceeding on back roads to Lexington Center and then Mass. Ave. back to East Arlington and home. Lovely day, cool, sunny, and breezy.

Arlington Center looking lonesome.

Paused in East Lexington to photograph the Morell-Dana House, a handsome Greek Revival manse.

Wind-tossed cherry blossoms (or similar), masked pedestrian, and his little dog, too.

Boy howdy! I've grown a beak.

Taking the Minuteman across Route 128 was convenient, but on such a nice day being part of the crowds felt like an error in judgement.

Sneaking across the Shawsheen River via the Bridge Street Wormhole.

No pictures of the climb up Page Road or the descent down Grove Street, but the latter was noteworthy because after hitting 30 mph, I was slammed by a powerful gust that presented as the Headwind That Ate Cleveland. This induced a shimmy in the thin-tubed, low-trail Nordavinden, which I damped by pressing the top tube with my right thigh. No harm done, but I took it as Mother Nature's way of telling me to increase the tension of the Stronglight needle-bearing headset, just a smidge.

A big magnolia seen on the way back to Lexington Center.

Checking out the Minuteman traffic behind Lexington Center before jumping back on Mass. Ave. for the return.

Took the Trucker DeLuxe on a quick ride from East Arlington to Lexington Center and back on Mass. Ave., 12 miles. The tailwind I hadn't noticed outbound became the headwind demanding my attention inbound, but the windblocking jacket did its job.

Rode masked again, and once again found myself noticing everyone who was barefaced. Also noticed that the warm, moist environment inside the mask recapitulates the warm, moist conditions in the nasal passages; the resemblance is not accidental: the mask is indeed a gigantic nose.

Had some headwinds far more intense than I expected down here in southeastern MA. Made things a bit difficult on a few stretches, given I've only ridden 3 times so far this spring. Absolutely zero conditioning right now!

Tinkered a bit with the Rawland Nordavinden to increase the pre-load on the Stronglight needle-bearing headset, hoping to cure the shimmy I had encountered at speed on a previous ride, then took it out for a hilly ride that would let me test that, 18 miles out Mass. Ave. and Marrett Road to Middle Street, then rolling under 128 on Lincoln Street, on past the Cambridge Reservoir and up Mill Street to North Great Road/2A to Old Mass. Ave. and Fisk Hill, then a block down Wood Street to Mass. Ave. and up the big hill slowly, down the big hill swiftly and on home on the long descent through Lexington and Arlington. No shimmy observed, no more tinkering with the headset unless that recurs.

Mass. Ave., Arlington: a roadkill rubber glove, souvenir of the pandemic, in a nekulturny equivalence class with discarded nips, hypodermic needles, and little bags of dog poop.

Arlington Center: Forty years of fun!

Climbing towards Arlington Heights.

Village of East Lexington, quietly time-travelling.

Lincoln: the Cambridge Reservoir looks to be fully charged. Lots of cyclists and runners along Lexington Road/Lincoln Street, more often masked than not. Good to be out in the sunny weather.

Mill Street, Lincoln: Please Oberve Speed Limits.

Fiske Hill, Minute Man National Park, seen from Old Mass. Ave., Lexington. Reminded me of lunch-hour picnics decades ago.

Stone Store, Mass. Ave., Lexington, at the top of the biggest hill on this ride, about to go whizzing down the hill, the acid test for the headset pre-load. No shimmy, I'm happy.

This has been a diecent week when viewed from the saddle. Tuesday morning I set out just before sunrise for 33 miles. I felt strong and really appreciated the Spring morning chill with birdsongs filling the air, and seeing more and more green. Wednesday I tried to recreate that warm fuzzy Spring time sunrise loving feeling albeit in winter gear and somehow cold fingers still. Needless to say I was fatigued and drained so I only made it for 13 miles in all. Thursday I had a bite to eat with my coffee before the sun came up and had another delightful 26 mile ride. All 3 rides were on my Allroads which now has over 2000 miles on its odometer.

Today, Saturday I rode twice. Again me and my Allroads set off at 0530 for 30.5 miles. After a few hours break I put on a different set of kit and headed out on my Seven Redsky for 36 more. I was planning to ride much more on the second ride but I think the last few weeks of heavy riding is catching up with me so I cut it short. In Weston I crossed paths with a gentleman on a bright yellow Trek roadbike who I believe mentioned he recognized me, perhaps he’s from this thread? Anyhow I’m at 1943 miles for the year and hope I can squeeze in 57 more before Thursday.

Needed a short ride this afternoon, so improvised a ride up the Mystic River in West Medford and continuing by the Mystic Lakes into Winchester, then continuing into the Flats before crossing Route 3 and beginning the first of two long, steep climbs up Johnson Road, followed by a sharp descent on Winchester Drive, Lexington, before crossing Lowell Street to continue on Maple Street, then following that over the Minuteman (lots of folks there) and picking up Mass. Ave. to roll back to Arlington and home. This was a 12-mile loop, all on roads, and there were an unusual number of people out taking the air, riding, walking, running, skating, and quite a few driving; many family groups, and more small children on the roads than I've ever seen. The barefaced and masked clans were each well-represented; I was breaking in a new mask, and was pleased with my oxygen supply during the climbs.

Harvard Ave., West Medford. Families out for a jolly afternoon. More masked children than I've seen previously.

Winchester, The Flats: daffodils, wisteria, shingles, and a quiet day.

Johnson Road, Winchester: looking backwards after climbing most of the first big hill. Note that the lion's share of the climb is around that curve, hidden from view.

And looking ahead to the top of the hill, up and over. Near the top of the second big hill, I counted 16 cars parked at the Whipple Hill trailhead. That's about 12 more than usual, and served as an index for the pent-up demand for a ramble in good Spring weather.

Rolled out on the Surly Trucker DeLuxe on this ride, big old Rat Trap Pass Extralights made for a smoth ride on the occasional runs of rough pavement, and the small cog on the Sugino triple crank civilized the hills.

Took the Surly Trucker DeLuxe out to race the rain to Lexington Center and back in the early afternoon, on Mass. Ave. the whole way after considering an ill-omened clot of four-abreast pedestrians seen from a distance on the Minuteman. The Surly and I won, back before the rain, but not without resistance from the wind on the return, which presented alternatively as a tiresome headwind and as a pesky and buffeting crosswind. For whatever reason, I've always found racing the weather to be more motivating than racing other cyclists. Perhaps it's the opportunity to relate to some Chinese dragons, the celestial bureaucrats of clouds and rain.

Intent as I was on making time, there was only one photograph, made during a brief stop in Lexington to mitigate an episode of chain suck.

This morning my alarm went off and I jumped out of bed like a kid on Christmas morning. I received an order yesterday that I placed for some fresh cycling attire to coordinate with my Allroads. Happy to rock my new threads I rode 31 miles. The particular jersey I wore was exceptionally comfortable at warmth and wind blocking.

Donned a mask and took the Rawland Nordavinden out on a variation of the North Bridge loop, 32 miles through Arlington, Lexington, Bedford, Carlisle, Concord, and Lincoln. Headed out Mass. Ave., picking up Bedford Street in Lexington Center and then taking the Minuteman to Depot Park (mistake, I think, but not a serious one). Rode out 225 across the Concord River, then climbed Skelton Road and enjoyed the rolling hills on River Road and Monument Street, then picked up Lexington Road and continued on North Great Road/Route 2A as far as Mill Street, picking up Lexington Road/Lincoln Street and pausing to admire the waves on the Cambridge Reservoir, then rolled under Route 128 and climbed Middle Street to Marrett Road and on past Dunback Meadow to Mass. Ave. and down the road from East Lexington to East Arlington and home.

East Lexington: this too shall pass.

Bedford: sudden change happens.

225 approaching the Concord River, a gray and breezy day with a bit of well-behaved traffic.

Crossing the Concord River into Carlisle under lowering skies.

River Road, Carlisle: Blue Bird Hill Farm.

Monument Street, Concord: top of the hill, Hutchins Farm. Most Spring ride reports on this route involve dodging a certain number of potholes, but I'm pleased to relate that the pavement on Monument Street was admirably smooth.

Concord Center: the Quick have the Dead sleeping in the back yard.

The Wayside, nicely renovated but closed to visitors.

East Arlington: flying the flags. Om mani padme hum.
