That is a seriously cool bicycle. Is that a shifter on the rear seat stay? If so what type of hub and how many gears are you running? Is that a one off front fork. I just love the whole layout of this bike. The handlebars sweeping curves are just right. This bike would fit right in on our local custom /BMX cruiser bike riding scene here in Sacramento, CA.

Schwinn made such usefull, durable, comfortable riding bicycles. I like that this is a Chicago made Schwinn also. I ride a Varsity from the Chicago era that is still putting a great big smile on my face every time I ride it.

U Brakes started out very early in the mountain bike revolution because cantilever brakes mounted on the seat stays would bend the stays outward when applied. This diminished their effectiveness. Thus they designed the u brake to be mounted on the rear forks. The rear forks are much bigger and stronger that the stays. They only lasted a couple of years before the manufacturers abandoned them and went back to cantilever bosses on the seat stays. However u brakes soldiered on under BMX bicycles to this day. Parts are easy to come by. I'm sorry to hear about the interference with your chainwheel size. Nice looking bike and I'm sure it works off road just fine as is.

I love viewing all these parts that I have never seen in person.
This is my first cruiser built from the frame up. I planned to use it for a commuter.
-Specialized Globe, circa 1998 or so. Frame and fork only. Originally a 3 speed.
Got it cheap because the seat post was very stuck.
-After trying the normal solutions, I sawed off the top of the seatpost and sawed the inside if it with a hack saw Blade). Took a while, but I was able to remove it by scrolling it like paper.
-Touched up the paint. Added a front drum brake wheel and rear Nexus roller brake freewheel hub on the back. (Spent way too much).

-After a few days of commuting, I concluded that the Globe was just too small for me.
-I removed all the parts from the Globe and transferred them over to my Alum Mongoose Zuma cruiser frame. I kept the Goose a long, long time.

The bike in the foreground is a 1960 Columbia Torpedo with Bendix Coaster brake. I installed an aftermarket Schwinn style rack and a Wald basket. Cleaned, regreased and adjusted everything. Crank had to be replaced because right hand threads were stripped. Still has original steel rims in good condition and 26"x 1.75" tires. New grips and new tires and tubes round out the picture. I also changed out the original 48 tooth front chainring for a 40 tooth so it would be easier to pedal. Bike had a lot of gentle miles on it. Back in service.



The pink bike is a much newer Schwinn coaster brake step through. I didn't know what to expect but while rebuilding her the quality of components was higher than on the Columbia. It actually rides very smoothly and easily. Both bikes are fairly light for steel frame bikes. I installed new grips and a Wald basket bolted to its already installed rack. I equipped both bikes with locks and covered chain for paint protection. Schwinn also has new pink grips and new tubes for those meaty 26" x 2.125" tires.


I was tasked with rebuilding these two cruisers for family members. Both pedal very easily and smoothly. They turned out very nicely. They are to be used around town on shopping trips and shorter pleasure rides.

Bought the Columbia Torpedo off of the local Craigslist for $75.00 dollars. The bike had surface rust but was generally in pretty good condition for such an old bicycle. The bearing races had wear but they had no pitting. Still has the original pedals which needed a session with the oil can. Bike rides smooth and easy. I had to true the wheels and tighten the spokes up some too. It has steel spokes although I own a Vuelta SL37 wheelset from this era that has steel spokes. I've gotten so used to stainless spokes but my boyhood Columbia had steel spokes as did my Austrian made 3 speed bike.

I scour Craigslist occasionally, but anything similar is scarfed up immediately or priced out of sight. Probably just as well since my n=n+1 has gone far enough even though I sold four bikes in the last year.

Updated pictures of my Electra stable .
After getting into the NetFlicks show “Stranger Things “ , I swapped my bars to mini apes . Reminds me of my early years . Although I never owned a bike as nice as these .

I’m back in the CRUISER mood , so today I put mini apes and a B-67 on my Specialized Hardrock.
had to swap out one brake cable . Added some pedal extenders to give me the pedal width I have with my Electras , that have 1/2 to 9/16 pedal adapters on them .
I had already swapped out the 3 ring crank for a single oval ring .
Smooth riding , hill climbing 1x7 Cruiser.

Converted this Mongoose IBOC into a cruiser last year. I've since added a basket to the front rack and a Crane brass bell; need to update my photos.

Sure it's got 3X8 gearing, but it cruises nicely

Thank you for posting this. A panther or trek sawyer is more my kind of bike. Would love to make a modern klunker interpretation.

I didn’t really understand why IGH until your post prompted me to look it up. SA makes an IGH that is 125mm apparently.

Do IGH bikes work OK? I’ve never ridden one.

Back in Black !
swapped the green wheelset out for the original black wheelset after changing the rear cog to a 24 tooth for neighborhood cruising .
Put the original Electra saddle back on too . Trying to decide which is more comfortable, leather or padded.
Pulled the rear rack off my Hardrock . I think it looks better .

EDIT: Added the latest picture of my black Electra Cruiser One , which is no longer a One , I swapped the wheels again for a black custom set of aluminum rims with a two speed kick back KT hub . I swapped the cog to a chrome 22 tooth . I went with a bit smaller set of tires , Kenda 26x1.9” cruiser slicks . Brought the overall height down a little where I can touch the ground while seated with my short legs . Put the Brooks B-67 back on too . Just looks cooler
