Mounting Simplex RD

Hi,

Hi,

i really want to use this Simplex LJ RD on this vintage Peugeot frame (I think it’s a PN-10 (531 main tubes). The dropouts don’t have an integrated mount.

Seems like you could just mount it at the back of the dropout with internal screw, but the little tab doesn’t seem to clear the dropout.

am I missing something? Any suggestions?

thank you!!

Yeah, an unthreaded Simplex dropout.

Or you need to find a correct upper bolt and claw for it.
Looks like someone hacked the hanger off your dropout.
Best advice - find a suntour with a claw mount and run that

OP: You might want to read the Red Clover Components article linked above. (You may have to cut and paste the text of the URL into your browser's URL window - for some reason, when I try the link in the comment above I keep getting a Bike Forums discussion instead of the article. Direct link to article here.)

That article has a section on Simplex hangers. BLUF: according to the article, there's no "standard" Simplex hanger (they vary) - and there's no easy way to tell which Simplex hanger goes with which Simplex RD.

The silver lining? Also according to the article, direct-mount Simplex RDs work fine when mounted on a Campagnolo hanger. The Simplex mounting bolt is 9mm and will fit through the 10mm threaded hole on the Campagnolo RD hanger.

Disclaimer: haven't tried this myself, and I have little knowledge or expertise regarding French bikes or components. But Red Clover is a good source of info.

What dedhed said. Somebody filed off your hanger to make their single-speed look more elegant. You need a claw. And because of the thickness of the dropout, you will probably need a longer bolt to attach the claw. And you might need some washers because the claw will be thinner than the hanger that used to be on there.

But don't try to attach it as shown. It will never work.

Alternately you could get a simplex hanger brazed back on to the dropout. That would probably require finding a donor dropout on an old frame.

N.B. the donor dropout need not be unthreaded or without a pivot stop; those features are superfluous to mounting a Simplex derailleur, but their presence does not affect how the Simplex derailleur mounts or operates. Indeed, later production Simplex dropouts were both threaded and provide pivot stops, so that non-Simplex derailleurs can also be mounted:

You appear to have been Drewed.

That sucks.

Because Drew sucks.
