Touroica 2021
For some time now there's been an on again/off again plan for a small group ride down California Hwy 1 prior to Eroica California. The event organizers may have cancelled the official ride, but Tourica lives on...
5 guys, 5 days on a credit card tour. In order to dejinxify this ride, I'll invoke the standard incantation: Che cosa potrebbe andare storto?
As usual for group tours I've been on, the number of moving parts is large. Only one rider is from the Bay Area, the rest of us are flying in or driving over. I'm taking my zero bike, which needs some work the day before we leave. None of us know everyone on the ride. There are stretches where water and food are a challenge. We're old farts on old bikes.
Currently set to leave the Redwood City Caltrain station at 10am Monday, 9/13. I lived in Redwood City for 14 years, so I can get us to our first night at Costanoa Lodge just north of Santa Cruz without GPS or directions. Monterey to Carmel gives us lots of choices to get lost, but past there the directions are quite simple: keep the Pacific Ocean on our right.
As I've done before on tours, I invited BF members to join up and ride alongside on any section you can. I call these "harbor pilots", as they know the local area better than we, and might guide us on an improved route than we planned. The Magical Mystery Tour of the PNW and my last TdMIL proved this to be a wise decision. It both improved the route and gave us an opportunity to make new friends.
Once there we'll spend the weekend in Cambria and make our own FauxRoica ride. Without anyone to police us, some will ride using clipless pedals, perhaps even indexed shifting (the horror!) If I'm not feeling like doing any hill climbing, might just go to Cayucas, turn around, ride up to San Simeon, and circle back. Who knows?

When I heard mention of an extra space, I contemplated asking to jump in for part of it but I would have had to figure out how to get from Big Sur or thereabouts back to the airport. Looking forward to ride reports and pics.

I am happy that the ride is still on. At the same time I am incredibly bummed that I will no longer be riding it (on account of my broken collarbone). I have been looking forward to, and prepping for this ride for ages. Just goes to show that even the best laid plans of mice and men...

I live in RWC and may take the morning off of “ the grind” to ride up to Skyline with you all at least. KMR (Kings Mtn Rd) is really not that bad. Tunitas would not be my first choice of descent on any bike, but your choice, it’s just steep and twisty. I was going to ride Eroica at the other end of the week and had offered to shuttle stuff or persons back from Cambria, but now that’s postponed I won’t be there. Let me know if you need any assistance at the start.

Steep and twisty is how I like my descents!
As for assistance, if you could carry my bike bags up to Skyline, I can take it from there.
